Lakeway was founded in 1836 by General James K. Polk, who named it for Major General Andrew J. Lake, the first commander of Mexican forces in Texas. The town grew rapidly during the mid-1850s as settlers arrived from Iowa and Illinois to homestead near the new site of Austin. By 1865, Lakeway had a population of 727 people and was part of the county seat of Travis County. In 1876, Lakeway became a municipality when it joined Travis County. The name change reflected the growth of the community and its status as an agricultural center. After World War I, lakeway experienced a period of economic prosperity thanks to irrigation projects and other investments by local officials. However, by 1930 most residents had left for various reasons including the Depression which depressed local businesses; however, land values stabilized during the postwar boom years that saw a rise in property prices around downtown lakeway and elsewhere in town. In recent years there has been renewed interest in preserving older buildings within or adjacent to Lakeway due to concerns about climate change and some safety issues associated with redevelopment plans nearby such as light rail transit service that could pass through areas housing older homes without taking into account their Conditionally protected status (CPL). There have also been calls for restoration works on portions of downtown that are no longer used or well-maintained due to their age or ribbon-cutting functions which have become more frequent since 1966 when city leaders decided not to pursue any development alongcited environmental concerns about potential noise problems from construction activities nearby The City Council is currently considering two options for how they will address these concerns: One option would be to allow developers access to use existing infrastructure such as streetslights so that they can create a "night sky" effect while another would call for replacement or renovation work on several blocks around downtown where intense sound levels are likely present from construction activities One possible solution may be for developers who want access to existing infrastructure like streetlights but don't want them used as part of their project proposal (such as those proposing Light Rail)to apply for conditional use permits which would allow them certain uses - such as parking - but still require adherence to certain conditions like noise limits
Lakeway was first settled by Texans in the 1830s. The town, located on a branch of the San Antonio River, was founded by John Houstoun and his wife, Phoebe. The settlement grew quickly and soon became a important commercial center in the area. In 1845, Lakeway became the capital of Texas and it remains an important city today.
