Lake Jackson is a small town in Potter County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The community began as a post office in 1892 and became a small town when it was annexed by Dallas in 1924. After World War II, Lake Jackson grew rapidly thanks to its location near Fort Worth and its proximity to the new Refinery District. The population peaked at 2,519 in 1960 but has declined since then. In recent years, however, development around the Refinery District has led to an increase in growth for Lake Jackson. In 2000, it had an estimated population of 2,752; by 2010 that number had increased to 3,045. Lake Jackson is named after James Fenton (1798-1881), who platned land on the banks of Buffalo Bayou east of present day Lake Jackson and founded Fenton station on Apr 24th 1836 with his brother John Fenton and three others from Galveston Island+. On Nov 9th 1840 he sold his interest along Buffalo Bayou for $4200 making him one of the first settlers in what would become Dallas County (). The first settler at 'Fenton Prairie' may have been George Huffman who purchased 640 acres from James Fenton about Feb 1863 or so when this area still lay within Montgomery County . At any rate there were many more purchases throughout the decades until by 1900 only 5 or 6 families remained hereabouts ! On Dec 7th 1912 Lillie Cady published her article "A Historical Sketch of Dallas County" which outlined some key events that took place during 1912 including annexation of Austin by Dallas county! She commented "Dallas County now includes all that lies east of I-35E including parts originally belonging to Montgomery". This included most notably 'Fenton Prairie' where Gussie Suggs purchased 640 acres between Feb 1863 & Mar 1865 from James Ettrick & family." By 1920 only 4 families remained living hereabouts although township boundaries had not yet been drawn !! Livingston Hotel built 1917 - current owner Mrs Linda Robertson bought it 1983

Today, Lake Jackson is an important part of local culture and economy in Caldwell County. Lake Jackson was named for General James K. Polk, who defeated Mexico in the 1848 Texas Revolution. The town of Jackson was founded in 1851 by farmers looking to escape the growing population of Houston. After a brief stint as a small community, Jackson grew steadily and soon became a major center of cotton production in East Texas. In 1875, the town merged with nearby Brownwood to form the new city of Brownwood.
