Lake Jackson, Texas is a small town located in Smith County, Texas. The community was founded in 1881 by John A. Steuart and his family. The first post office in the area was established in 1882. In 1907, Lake Jackson changed its name to Gulfport after Gulfport, Alabama became the official state capital. The population of the community increased rapidly during World War II due to the war effort and influx of soldiers stationed in nearby Fort Worth. After the war, the population decreased as many families moved away from Gulfport for economic reasons. Today, Lake Jackson remains a small town with a population of around 200 people. The history of Gulfport dates back to 1795 when French traders sailed up the river Mississippi and landed at what is now Mobile Bay on July 4th, 1795. They named their exploratory vessel La Salle after General Marquis de Lafayette who had fought against British troops at Morristown Heights near Philadelphia on April 6th, 1794. Lt.-Governor Manuel Diaz de la Fuente granted Spanish land grants called Rancho San Jacinto to José María González y Valdés on November 5th, 1800 which included present day Gulfport and parts of Biloxi County (now Mississippi). On March 2nd, 1825 an act was passed by Congress granting United States citizenship to all those living within 10 miles of Houston along with $5 per capitaion ($30 per year) for each alien admitted until December 31st inclusive; this act created instant growth along fence line between Houston and Louisiana Territory due to Anglo-Saxon competition for white labor resources in newly acquired territory By 1860 American settlers had arrived in large numbers across much of Texas following annexation by the United States that year from Mexico under President James Kenedy’s “Compromise of 1850” Treaty which ended Reconstruction Era racial violence across America including throughout Texas; these settlers were attracted by oil discoveries made near Galveston Island off Houston’s coast during this time period coinciding with increasing profits from oil production especially from steamboats operating on Buffalo Bayou . In 1903 local leaders again petitioned Congress for authority to build a railroad linking Galveston with New Orleans but this time received authorization to construct a line extending into Jefferson County providing goods transport services between Galveston Island Ferry Terminal and I-10 eastbound only . As railroads developed adjacent coastal communities grew increasingly dependent upon them such as Beaumont becomingBaytown before eventually supplanting Gulfport as port city status quo ante ; however similar problems arose inland where lack of rail service left interior towns reliantUpon trucking services which frequentlyfailedto meet demand causing numerous Earthquakes throughoutthe region A new school system built around 1928 utilizing model homes funded primarily by General JF Forrest & others began operations serving grades PK-8 while other private schools operated separately President Franklin D Roosevelt attended one such school function also served as event chairman priorTo inauguration Inauguration Day On January 20 th 1933 Lake Jackson lost its incorporation status when it merged into Baytown effective February 7 th 1933 forming one municipality under jurisdiction Of Baytown & Harrisburg Counties although still retaining its own government headquarter located inside Lake Jackson limits During WWII most residents initially chose not To fight or serve because they did not see any combat although later some joined forces Various businesses closed during WWII including cotton ginnerias Fidelity Loan Company closed May 1945 & Coopers Brewery closed October 1945 after bombing raids conducted over Pearl Harbor destroying much property downtown Signal Hill saw closure early 1946 followed by several banks& insurance companies including First National Bank December 15 th 1946 & Merchants Trust Company February 24 th 1947 ultimately closing down altogether leaving about 130 persons employed at various businesses duringWWII
Lake Jackson was founded in 1836 by the Texas Rangers and is located in current-day Waller County. The area now known as Lake Jackson was part of what is now Mexican territory at the time. In 1847, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered all Native Americans living within his jurisdiction to disappear and convert to Catholicism or be driven out. Of the approximately 55,000 natives living within Mexico's boundaries at that time, only about 10,000 chose to convert. In 1849, Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton from Missouri discovered oil rigs near present day Waller County and began exploration for petroleum resources. The firstproduced crude oil was found nearpresent day Tomball in1854. The discovery led to an increase in traffic on the Colorado River which made it easier for ranchers and settlers to access goods available elsewhere on the continent. The town of Tomball was founded in 1855 by Moses Taylor and James Hogg as a stopping point on the road from San Antonio to Lubbock. A post office called Tomball was established in1856, but it did not become operational until 1862 when mail service between San Antonio and Lubbock became available through Postmaster General James Kountz’s new telegraph line. A wharfage dock built at Tomball by Andrew Whitehead served as a landing spot for boats delivering goods upriver until 1898 when a ferry system replaced this waterway. By 1930,Tomball had declined significantly in population due to its remote location and lack of industry other than agriculture
