Lake Jackson was a small, shallow body of water located in Starr County, Texas. It lay at the junction of the Brazos and Canadian Rivers. The name was derived from the Choctaw word jaca, meaning "lake." The first known inhabitants of this area were the Kenedy people who lived along the Arkansas River. They hunted deer, turtle, and other animals that lived in the marshy areas near their settlements. In 1824, an American party led by Captain James Waco discovered this area and named it for General David Hogg (1797-1834), one of the leaders of the Texan Revolution against Mexican rule. In 1836, Colonel John Foard established Fort Bend County on land that he had purchased from The Mexican Government. He named his new post for General Hogg's brother-in-law Major Asa Porterfield (1792-1860). The fort served as a military post until it was destroyed by a flood in 1845. On May 25, 1850, President Zachary Taylor ordered Lieutenant Colonel Jens Jensen to build a new fort at Lake Jackson to serve as a base for operations in Mexico City during its war with America. A company of Ulysses S. Grant's 7th Cavalry Regiment arrived at Fort Bend County on July 4th and began construction of what is now called White House Hill on July 20th. This fort served as headquarters for Confederate forces during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). On November 2nd, 1871, Congress passed an act appropriating $10 million dollars to construct a trunk line railroad from Galveston to Houston through Starr County. Governor Leland Stanford signed the bill into law on December 3rd and construction began immediately with plans to have trains reach Houston by April 1st 1973! On January 6th1974 Amtrak announced that they would be running passenger service between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Greenville Junction providing access to points east including Austin etc., but this service never materialized due to budget cuts
Lake Jackson was founded in 1836 by Captain James K. Polk as a Site for the U.S. Navy to build a naval base on the present day Texas coast. The construction of the navy's first ship, USS Texas, began in 1840 and ended in 1845 when it was replaced by USS Missouri. In 1851, President James Buchanan designated Lake Jackson as the formal capital of the new Confederate States of America. At its inception, Lake Jackson contained over one hundred fifty buildings and served as an important center for government and business operations during the secession crisis that followed the American Civil War. After Union forces captured Austin in 1865, they moved their main military headquarters to San Antonio and lost interest in using Lake Jackson as their primary navalbase. The city gradually declined until it was abandoned altogether in 1972 following Hurricane Donna which destroyed much of downtown Houston and most of its historic infrastructure including Lake Jackson's original arsenal building dating back to 1795。 Today, parts of Lakeshore Park are still used as a public park while other sections have been redeveloped into apartment complexes or commercial office buildings.
