La Porte became an important center for trade and commerce. It was also known for its beautiful churches and homes. The town experienced significant growth during the late 19th century, thanks to the arrival of railroad transportation and the development of industry. In 1907, La Porte underwent an important transformation when it became the site of the first state fair in Texas. The fair attracted large numbers of people from all over the state and brought much economic prosperity to the town. However, by 1920 LaPorte had began to experience Decline as manufacturing jobs left for newer, better-paying opportunities elsewhere in Texas. By 2000, LaPorte had lost most of its commercial significance and was largely deserted by its citizens. However, some residents have preserved portions of their community through efforts like Heritage Day celebrations and recreations of traditional lifestyle items such as homemade breads and pies).
In 1876, the first post office in La Porte was established. The town was named for Captain James P. LaPorte who built a trading post here in 1854. In 1907, La Porte became the county seat of Hudspeth County and the name of the county seat changed to Terrell in 1912.
