La Porte, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas, located about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Dallas. It was founded in 1876 by John W. La Porte and his wife, Eliza Ralston-Lodge, as a transient settlement on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The town’s name comes from its location on both banks of the river: on one bank were two large timber piles used to support early mills; and on the other bank was a landing for steamboats that ferried goods upriver to Dallas and Fort Worth. Some residents also accumulated land near present-day LaPorte Landing to create a larger community. In 1908 LaPorte voters passed an ordinance giving themselves their own fire department and making it one of the first towns in Texas to adopt such an ordinance. The city charter was adopted in 1912, creating what is now TXDOT within TXDOT’s borders – which began primarily as a response to concerns about increasing automobile traffic in LaPorte and neighboring towns during World War I. The post office closed in 1963 but reopened under new management several years later with ZIP code 77501 becoming operative on April 14th, 1967; this coincided with then-new nearby Dallas suburb Mesquite becoming operational as well (the ZIP code had been 75215 before). In 1978 TXDOT moved its offices from downtown Dallas into newly built facilities adjacent to US 75 just south of downtown LaPorte – annexing much of what is now much more suburban Mesquite outside of city limits while keeping most aspects of downtownDallas functioning as usual.) From 1978 until 2003 there were no streetlights or municipality signs anywhere within city limits! La Porte, Texas was founded by the James K. Polk family in 1876 as a small community on the Red River. The town grew rapidly after it was selected for the new United States borderplex on the Mexican–American War battlefield of Palo Alto. La Porte became an important commercial and military center during the American Civil War, and its population increased to over 3,000 in 1880. After the war, La Porte experienced rapid growth as a result of its position as a crossroads between Central America and Texas. In 1907, La Porte became one of nineteen towns located within El Paso County when that county was created from parts of Webb County and San Antonio County. The post-World War II years were difficult for LaPorte because of its location near El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. However, thanks to government investment in agricultural production and infrastructure development, LaPorte has slowly bounced back since the late 1990s.
