Additionally, many important military engagements took place within or around LaPorte during that time period including Perry’s Battle of San Jacinto (June 6, 1868) and Austerlitz Offensive (May 1-4, 1870). Aftermath of World War I saw continued growth throughout much of West Texas with industry taking hold in nearby Fort Worth while small towns scattered throughout East Texas developed their own economies based on agriculture or ranching operations. However by 1930 there were only a handful remaining local businesses left in Downtown La Porte while most residents resided outside the downtown core or along Interstate 20 highway southward towards Amarillo .
The La Porte County courthouse was built in 1892. It is a two-story, Classical Revival style structure with a basement and addition. The building has a hipped roof and large, projecting wing. It is located on the corner of Second Street and Market Avenue in LaPorte.
