The La Porte Army Base was established in 1915, making it one of the oldest and largest military installations in Texas. The base has been home to the Texas Army National Guard since 1920 and has played an important role in the state's history, both during World War I and World War II. In 1951, the La Porte Army Base was redesignated as Fort Worth Army Airfield and began hosting airfields for both the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) and United States Navy (USN). In 2003, Fort WorthArmy Airfield was closed following its acquisition by Republic Aviation Corporation. Today, portions ofFort WorthArmy Airfield remain dedicated to housing UH-60 Blackhawks operated by the Texas Military Affairs Command.
