The La Porte Army Depot was originally established in 1887 as the Texas armory. The depot served as a training ground for the Texas National Guard and later the Texas Army National Guard. In 1963, the army decommissioned its installations at La Porte and transferred all of its equipment and supplies to Fort Hood, Texas. In 1998, Fort Hood closed its military installation and the remaining assets were transferred to La Porte Army Depot. The depot has been home to various military functions including storage, maintenance, inventory management, munitions storage, research and development activities, and visitor services. Since 1963, when the army decommissioned its installations at La Porte, there have been numerousArmy Deployed Gifts (ADGs) made available through Military One-Stop Centers throughout the United States. ADGs are gifts that are sent directly from an army unit or branch stationed abroad to individuals within our country who may be in need of support or assistance during their time of service or deployment. Since the beginning of World War II, the La Porte Army National Guard has been deployed to support our nation's military. In 1946, the La Porte Guard was mobilized for Operation Neptune's Spear which led to the Korean War. From 1950-1953, the Guard was mobilized forOperation Desperado which led to the Mexican Border Crisis. In 1957-1960, the La Porte National Guard was mobilized for Rolling Thunder in response to The Vietnam War. In 1987-1988, the LaPorte National Guard was mobilized for Desert Storm in response to Gulf War I.
The town of La Porte, Texas is located in the Panhandle of Texas. The population was 7,419 at the 2010 census. La Porte is a small town with a small economy. The average income for a household in La Porte is $41,500. The only industry in La Porte is agriculture which employs about 60% of the workforce. LaPorte has a history going back to 1836 when it was established as an agricultural outpost on the lower Brazos River by Caddo and Wichita Indians. A post office was established in 1838, and by 1840 there were twenty-one citizens living in LaPorte. In 1861 General Sam Houston founded what would become Baylor University and named part of its campus after LaPorte County’s first settler, John Hoggarty Baylor (1811-1872). In 1870, two years after Houston’s death, General James Fenton took command of Union Army forces east of the Arkansas River and invaded Texas. He encountered Mexican troops near San Antonio and ordered his men to turn around without battle but they proceeded to deploy into Mexico de Allende (now Coahuila) as skirmishers instead of retreating back across the river as ordered. Afterward Fenton became governor of New Mexico Territory and decided that Texas should be annexation into that territory rather than go through another war with Mexico because he didn’t want “a race issue” between Texans and Mexicans developing south of the border; this decision led to much animosity towards him among some Texans who saw him as weak kinless relative to those behind Independence Hall day chants: “Heil Houston! Heil Adams!” One result was that many farmers abandoned their homes during Reconstruction so that they could stay within borders controlled by white supremacists; these people later formed their own political factions known as Redeemer Democrats or Reformer Republicans. La Porte, Texas was founded by the Lubbock and Sherman families in 1879. The town quickly became a major center for cattle drives and ranching. La Porte also became one of the most important railroad towns in Texas due to its location near the Chisholm Trail. The town was renamed LaPorte in 1907 after General George Crockett, who had helped start the railroad here. In 1938, La Porte was annexed by Dallas.
In 1836, La Porte was founded byCaptain John F. Smith and his party of freighters as a trading post on the Brazos River. The town grew rapidly due to its location and its access to water. By 1840, La Porte had become an important stopping point for travelers along the route from Texas City to San Antonio and vice versa. In 1849, General Sam Houston's forces invaded Mexico and during the Battle of Palo Alto (which took place in what is now Austin), Houston's forces were met with heavy resistance from Mexican troops led by Captain Rodriguez. Rodriguez was killed in the battle, which ended with Mexican casualties numbering over 10,000 including Rodriguez's widow and five children. Commodore James Biddle decided to give up on invading Mexico and withdrew his forces back to Texas City, leaving La Porte in hands of Texans. La Porte continued to prosper until 1922 when a major flood destroyed most of the town center and left it abandoned for years. In 1935-1936, LaPorte was returned to use as an open air museum after being closed for many years due to bad weather conditions.
