The Marines of La Marque, Texas were a regiment of the United States Marine Corps that was activated on October 1, 1942. The unit was organized as part of the Expansionary Force and deployed to Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands campaign. Upon arrival, they were attached to II Marine Division which fought in the battle for Isig airstrip. In January 1943, they were ordered to take part in Operation Cartwheel and helped land American forces at Ulithi Island. They later served in the Battle of Okinawa where they fought against Japan's Imperial Army and navy. After World War II ended, most marines returned to civilian life but some remained with the Marine Corps Reserve until it was disbanded on September 15, 1946. On November 6, 1948, I Marine Regiment detachment Detachment One became operational at Camp Pendleton when Headquarters Company relocated from San Diego Naval Air Station there. On December 9th detachments Two (Red) and Three (Green) became operational at Hickam AFB Hawaii before finally becoming an all-marine regiment on March 5th 1949 when Red detached from I Marines to become an all-Navy detachment under Commandant First Class Jack Waddell who commanded Amphibious Forces Pacific Fleet during Korean War era In 1950s detachments Four (Gold), Five (Blue), Six (Marine White), Seven (Marine Green), Eight(Golden Globe) and Nine(Silver dollar) were also activated while a detachment Eleven(Gold star) was activated on February 20th 1951 while seeking equipment transfer from US Navy base Pearl Harbor Hawaii after their ships got sunk during amphibious landing operation Bonin Islands by Japanese Imperial Navy ship Akagi off Nobunaga island Japan During 1960s detachments Thirteen(Aircraft Carriers squadron 1st class)), Fifteen(), Seventeen(), Eighteen() and Nineteen() along with Twenty-One()) became operational while a detachment Twenty two () became operational on July 1st 1966 as part of reactivation ceremony for old Manta Unit which had been deactivated since 1945 . currently there are only Eleven active marine detachments with total strength around 4500 military personnel including 3 platoons each providing security for marine barracks located around La Marque town limits

In 1930, UTA moved from Austin to La Marque and then again in 1966 when it moved from San Marcos to UTA. In 2006, LaMarque voters passed an ordinance making pets on-campus at UTA considered property of the school and not subject to regulation by city or county officials.
