The town of La Marque, Texas was founded in 1881 by John M. Slaughter and his wife, Anna Maria Slaughter. The Slaughter family was the first permanent settlers in the area that is now La Marque. They named their holdings "La Marque" after their mother's maiden name, Marie- Louise L’Heureux. The original homesteads were located on the present day east side of town, just south of FM 1960. In 1912, they added a second property to their holdings and named it La Grange because it had been a home for many years to Mrs. Clementson, one of Anna Maria Slaughter's sisters. In 1916, Mr. and Mrs. Jervis Gilmore bought additional land in La Marque and continue to live there until their death in 1984. From 1919 until its incorporation as a municipality in 1932, LaMarque served as the seat of government forwest Texas County under the leadership of Mayor George Fenton Haggerty III and Councilman Tex Hilliard II (1922-1929). In 1911, John M. Slaughter started a clothing business at his home called "John's Clothes." It became an important part of local economy due to its location near East Side School which served students from west Texas counties including La Marque through 1922 when school merged into Hudspeth County public schools system On July 1st 1898 AnnaMaria Slaughter married James Earle Smith who also owned land east of town near FM 1960 James Earle Smith sold his land in 1912 to John M Stallworth who then renamed his land "LaGrange". On November 10th 1933 laGrange incorporated as a Municipality
La Marque is a community in Collin County, Texas, United States. It was founded by Spaniards in the late 18th century and named for the Marqués de la Marque, who had run cattle on the property. La Marque grew rapidly after oil was discovered there in 1901. The Post Office was opened in 1903 and the first store closed in 1911. In 1954, La Marque incorporated as a city under the name of Commerce City. In 1978, LaMarque changed its name to Murfreesboro after becoming part of Manchester, Tennessee.
