Kingsville is a town in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Llano River. The population was 5,467 at the 2010 census. The town was named for George Washington Carver, who donated land to the town in 1876. In 1880, Kingsville became an independent municipality; it had a school and a courthouse but no public services or utilities. The first settlers in Kingsville were James and Susanna Slaughter, who arrived in 1836. The Slaughter's had been living on the east bank of the San Antonio River since they emigrated from New York in 1824. They started a small grocery business and also raised crops. In 1839, they built a toll road to connect their land with nearby Austin. The toll road was one of the earliest attempts at highway construction in Texas. In 1840, John Dawson founded Dawson's Fort on the site of present-day Kingville. Dawson was an early settler in what is now Chambers County and his fort served as a trading post for years until it was destroyed by Indians in 1865. Kingville first saw action during the Mexican–American War when Confederate forces attacked Ulysses S. Grant's column near its intersection with Road 7 on October 25, 1861. Union troops later drove the Confederates out of town after retaking it September 2, 1862. In 1870, J B Hogg established Hogg's store at what is now corner of High Street and Elm Drive in central Kingsville. The store became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1984 due to economic troubles.
