Killeen, Texas is a town in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,903 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from "Killeen Army Depot" which was founded in 1881 by General John F. Kirby Smith as a supply depot for the Confederate army during the American Civil War. The Killeen post office opened on July 6, 1881, and closed on December 31, 1954. It was reopened on January 3, 1955 under new management and became an incorporated municipality on October 16 of that year. As of the 2010 census there were 1,903 people living in Killeen proper with a total land area of . In 2003-2004 Killeen annexed part of Brushy Bayou to form a second municipality known as Brushy Bayou Village Incorporated (BBVI). The first settler in what is now Killeen was Wm Hargrave who arrived in 1836 and named his place “Killeene” after his kinsman Colonel David Kilpatrick’s home county – Meath in Ireland. Hargrave's farmstead still stands today near present day Dairyland Drive and he donated land to the Methodist Episcopal Church which built a schoolhouse thereon in 1840-1841. A little more than one mile west of where Hargrave's farmstead still stands lies what is now known as Old Main Street; this street was laid out by Captain James Bowie when he surveyed Plano Township circa 1824-27 following his purchase of Rancho La Salle from Mexico City Mayor Agustín de la Carrera y Marcos de Zúñiga alias Soldado Peralta (or simply Gomez).
