Killeen, Texas is a town located in Kenedy County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kenedy County. The community of Denton lies to the south and east of Killeen. The first settlers in what is now Killeen were farmers who arrived in 1827. They named their town after Captain James H. Kelley, an American military officer who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Mexican Texas. In 1881, John A. White formed a company to build a rail line through what is now Denton and named his new town after him – White City (now part of Dallas). The first post office was established in 1880, and the name of the town was changed to Killeen on November 14th that year by order of President Ronald Reagan. The city's rich history can be found from its earliest days when it was one of many small settlements along the Bexar River near San Antonio during its early years as a trading post for Native Americans such as the Kiowa and Comanche tribes. One early settler, William McCoy, built his home on Rancho de las Encinas which still stands today across from downtown Killeen! In 1876 local merchants donated land for a public square which would become known as Market Square In 1907 Interstate 10 crossed over into what is now Kenedy County and led directly to downtown where businesses started popping up including several banks (the Post Office being one), movie theaters (including one opened by Texan filmmaker Cecil B DeMille), hotels/motels etc., including one called “The Cotton Club” which became world famous for hosting live shows by stars like Jerry Lee Lewis and Joe Bonamassa! Downtown also hosted annual fairs such as rodeos, carnivals etc…..which continue to this day! By 1960 there were more than 100 businesses operating inside or near downtown with maybe another 50 or so servicing outlying areas like Denton Road and Slaughter Road……… making it quite an entrepreneurial environment back then ! Today some remaining relics from those days include restaurant marquees still standing outside someofDowntown's most popular establishments !!!
