In 1912, Mrs. Ahern gifted her grandson Harry an automatic rifle from her husband’s collection. This firearm would be used as part of operations against rustlers during World War I and again during World War II. Killeen is a town in Clay County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,927 at the 2010 census. Killeen is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. It is the seat of Clay County and home to the high school district that includes Killeen High School and South Plains College. The first Europeans to visit what is now Killeen were traders from New Mexico who named it "Gila Bend" in 1824 because they saw a bend in the Gila River near present-day Killeen. In 1845, Wm. Hance built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the river and named it "Hance's Bluff." In 1851, John Wesley Powell passed through this region on his way to find the Santa Fe Trail and called it "Powell's Bluff". A post office called Killeen was established in 1853, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1865, Jno. Capps founded Clear Fork cotton gin near present-day Killeen; this gin became one of the largest cotton gins in Texas. In 1895, Ladd & Co., general merchandisers for Texaco oil wells throughout East Texas started operations at their new refinery located just north of downtown Killeens along I-10 (now Loop 410) under direction of Royce Ladd himself – one of its early incorporators – as well as father-in-law Sam Houston’s friend and First Lady Sam Houston’s brother John Fincher from San Antonio). The refinery continued production until November 30, 1984 when allTexaco refining operations ended after more than fifty years contributed by over seventy thousand employees across fivestates! These days you can still see some remnants of Royce Ladd’s original building which still stands on US Highway 6 North just east of Loop 410! It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 Today there are many businesses which call Killeen home including restaurants such as Longhorn Steakhouse & Saloon (the only location open 24/7), Walmart Supercenter (opened 2006), Chipotle Mexican Grill & Cantina (opened 2007), BBQ joints such as Smokey Joe's Barbecue Pit (open since 1980) and Tommy Tho restaurant with locations throughout Austin TX There also several golf courses located within walking distance including Pinnacle Hills Golf Course (& adjacent Country Club), Cedar Hill Open Air Golf Course (& adjacent Lake Travis Country Club) - both operated by The Links at Cedar Hill Resort - Chaparral Golf Course (& adjacent Rancho Chico Country Club) - operated by Lone Star Sportsmans clubCorp - Flower Mound Country Club (.5 mile west off FM 620)- all operated by member clubs or individual members There are several convenience stores like White Sands Pharmacy (opened 1956) soon to be replaced by Walgreens Boots Alliance - Kroger - Albertsons grocery store opened 2009 next door to White Sands Pharmacy Other local businesses include two churches: First Baptist Church west side & Second Baptist Church east side both operating full time ministries with classes for children karate/juiceboxing/jazzercise etc... Alliant Health System operates Medical Centers(Clinic #2 on south side main street). nearby Deer Park Mall has an additional 100+ shop locations including Sears department store chain anchored by Lord& Taylor jeans

Killeen is a small town in Texas, located about 20 miles west of Austin on the banks of the Colorado River. The community was founded in 1876 by Scots-Irish immigrants as a railroad stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. In 1905, Killeen incorporated as a municipality. It became an independent city in 1966 and has since grown to be one of the most populous towns in Travis County with a population of over 25,000. The town’s history can be traced back to 1876 when Scots-Irish immigrants arrived at Killeen on the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. They first settled in what is now Killeen Heights and built their first homes there. By 1905, many of these immigrants had moved to what is now North Park and started another business venture - trading goods they brought with them from Ireland for goods sold by local farmers. During World War II, many Killeen residents served in the military or were drafted into service. Many are still remembered today for their heroism during that time period – such as Pfc. John Cavanaugh who gave his life saving assistance to fellow soldier Pvt. Dave Laughlin while both were trapped inside an enemy POW camp during the Vietnam War. Killeen also has some notable citizens who have held high positions within their communities – such as Mayor Harry Ladd and Police Chief Donny Pitkin – both OFD officers who have led their departments to success over the years.
Killeen was founded in 1881 by John H. Killeen and his family. The town grew quickly, becoming a center for cotton production and trade. In 1907, the Killeens donated land to the city of Fort Worth for its first public park. The park became an important social and economic resource for the community, and remains a popular tourist destination today.
