Killeen is a small town in Archer County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls metropolitan area. The Killeen post office opened on October 5, 1872. The name comes from the Scots-Irish word "calli", meaning "a hilly country tract". The first settler in what would become Killeen was John McDowell and his family who arrived in 1873. In 1907, J.P. Morgan built a sawmill on the current site of the Killeen Mall which remains operationally active to this day as J crewing services are provided by Valley Sawmills Incorporated.. In 1913, oil began flowing discovery drillers found shale gas near present day Killeen providing an impetus for oil production in early 1914 and growth along with it started in earnest for this small town located just east of Wichita Falls on Hwy 281 south of I-35W In 1916 during World War I Miller Brothers Pipe Line built a pipeline from Houston to Fort Worth that linked with US 90 north for shipment to Kerrville enroute to Dallas . This brought many people and businesses into town including Sears Roebuck who opened up their original store at 6th & Main Streets (now Joe's Coffee) before moving across the street to Abilene Street where they remain today . Other early businesses included Mr Foust's Used Clothing Store (now Goodwill Industries), Waffle House (now JJ's place), hardware store and candy store all situated between 6th & Main Streets until consolidation occurred in 1949 when those businesses were combined into one large store anchored by Piggly Wiggly Cafeteria which still operates today as an anchor tenant
