Killeen is a town in San Patricio County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. At its peak in the 1920s, Killeen had a population of over 10,000 people. The town was founded by Anglo-American settlers in 1876 as a small farming community on the banks of Bandera Creek. The name "Killeen" is derived from the Kiowa word "killa," meaning 'settlement'. In 1912 Killeen became an incorporated municipality and changed its name to SanPatricio (San Antonio). The first post office in Killeen opened in 1907. In 1925 the Texaco oil refinery burned which destroyed many homes and businesses within walking distance of downtown Killeen. This event forever altered how people viewed their local civic center and streetscape - this refinery still dominates one corner of downtown today! In 1938 Killeen adopted its current form as an unincorporated community with a government-sponsored school system that remains operational to this day Mayor Edwin J. Houston served from 1951 until his death on October 15th, 1980; he was succeeded by his son Edwin H., Jr.. On November 5th, 1984 city voters passed Proposition 25 which gave city management authority to establish fire departments within town limits The City Manager's office now oversees all aspects of municipal life including street cleaning, trash pickup and lighting ordinances
