The United States Army Corps of Engineers was established in 1885. The Corps is responsible for water, land, and air defense activities in the Killeen-McLennan region. In 1916, the Texas Legislature created the Texas Armies Forces Act to establish a separate army corps within the state government. The act also authorized the purchase of weapons and equipment for the new army. On November 3, 1916, Lieutenant Colonel J.B. Huggins became Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion Texas Armies Forces Regiment #1 at Killeen Army Depot. On July 11, 1917, 1st Battalion Texas Armies Forces Regiment #1 was redesignated as Company A (2nd Infantry) of 4th Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division stationed at Fort Sam Houston Barracks in San Antonio. In October 1918, 4th Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division moved to Camp Bowie near Austin and relieved 5th Brigade Combat Team 3rd Infantry Division which had been serving as an occupation force in Germany since September 1919. In 1922-1923 4th Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division served as an artillery brigade inactivated at Ft Worth Army Airfield then reactivated there on October 15 1923 under command of Major General Wm C Balfour commanding Third Corps Artillery Group headquartered at Lubbock Army Airfield with Battery D (4/2 inch Howitzer), Midshipmen’s Reconnaissance Squadron Two (MRS2), Headquarters and Headquarters Company First Battalion (Texas Volunteers)First Marine Regiment attached thereto and Companies A & B from 8th Marine Regiment detached thence to form Provisional battalion HQ company I (3rd Marine Detachment). December 10 1923 detachment turned over command to 1st Marines when Marine Unit transferred from Navy Yard Norfolk Va under control of Fifth Naval District Company A(2ND INFANTRY) deactivated on Okinawa on February 9 1945 company I reorganized on Okinawa as 5TH MARINE DIVISION January 1945

The Killeen Army Garrison was established in 1865 and has served the community since. The garrison includes an infantry battalion, a cavalry squadron, a artillery battery, and a service detachment. In 2013-14, the Killeen Army Garrisonmen earned the Texas Commission on Human Rights’ “Humanitarian Award for Excellence in Defense Programs” for their work to support military veterans and their families.
Killeen, Texas is located in the Mid-Continent region of the United States. It is bordered by Austin to the north, Longview to the east, Fort Worth to the south and Haskell County to the west. The population of Killeen was estimated at 71,821 as of 2010. The city is named after General James Killeen who fought in the Mexican-American War and was awarded a Medal of Honor for his bravery. The original town site was just outside present day Killeen on what is now FM 535. In 1837, Colonel John Hogg organized a Volunteer Cavalry Regiment known as The Rangers which served in Texan Independence Wars against Mexico. Afterward, Hogg donated land that became downtown Killeen. Today, downtown Killeen contains many businesses and government buildings including City Hall and State Capitol Building which are both used as tourist attractions. Killeen also has another distinction which may be unique among American cities: it has been declared a Hispanic Heritage District by the Texas Historical Commission. This designation honors significant Latino contributions to Killeen through business, culture, art and history since its incorporation into Texas in 1836. Some of these include Francisco Ibarra who founded Phoenicia Paper Mill in 1909 andabalco de la Garza who opened La Mexicana restaurant on Broadway in 1959 which remains one of Killeens most popular restaurants today; José Antonio Abreuwho built Amistad Nursing Home in 1938; Manuel Gomez who founded El Paso Brewing Company in 1961; Rubén Castillo Hernandez who operated Don Julio’s Cafeteria from 1955 until his death in 1966;and Andres Rodriguez Orozco whose family owns Fiesta Gardens Golf Course & Resort whichopened its doors in 1977).

Killeen is a town in Kaufman County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,671 at the 2010 census. Killeen is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first post office in Killeen was established on November 1, 1876. It served as the county seat and general store for Kaufman County until it moved to Round Rock in 1881. The current Post Office building was built in 1927 and is also the business center for the town. The townsite that now includes Killeen was first settled by white settlers in 1875-77 when they began to clear land near present-day Loop 410 and Loop 377 roads. In 1880, a group of men from nearby Lubbock purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of the Brazos River for $7 per acre ($). They named their new settlement "Killeen" after General James Kilpatrick who had led them during the Texas Revolution. In 1907, Killeen became one of eleven cities licensed by state lawmakers to issue city bonds to finance public works projects including a new high school and courthouse complex. The effort failed but resulted in some important lessons learned about how city government could be improved; such as how bond issues should be structured so that citizens vote on them directly instead of through elected officials who may not always reflect their needs or values

The town grew rapidly after the discovery of oil in 1901, and soon became one of the leading industrial centers in Texas. In the 1920s, Killeen’s reputation as a center for munitions manufacturing helped make it an important tourist destination.
