Kilgore was a small town in Sherman County, Texas, until the late 1800s. The first settler in what is now Kilgore was John Ladd, who arrived in 1853. He and his family were the first to live in what is now Kilgore Township. The town of Kilgore began as a small farming community with about twenty people. By 1880, the population had grown to seventy-five people. In 1892, the Sherman County Courthouse was built and served as the county seat for many years. In 1902, it was replaced by a new courthouse which still stands today. In 1935, Kilgore became one of six towns (along with Poteetown, Carthage Junction, Midland Junction, Waco Falls, and White Sands) that consolidated into one municipality under the name of Sherman County. This consolidation made it easier for businesses to locate within one county and helped reduce costs associated with having multiple governing bodies.
Kilgore was founded in 1879 by J.W. Kilgore and his wife, Anna. The town grew rapidly after it was incorporated as a village in 1881. In 1906, Kilgore became the county seat of Hudspeth County. The population of Kilgore peaked at over 10,000 in the 1920s but has since declined to around 7,500 today.
