The Kerrville Naval Militia is a volunteer organization founded in 1907, that has served the community in various capacities since then. The unit's history goes back to 1907 when Captain John A. Kerr organized the first naval militia detachment in Kerrville. Since then, the navy deployed gift history has been an important part of the military culture and tradition within the community. From donated uniforms and equipment to flowers and chocolates, many people have contributed their time and resources to support our local military. In 2014, we marked 100 years of service to our community by hosting a commemorative event at City Hall. In attendance were members of the navy who recount their memories of serving with us over the years. It was wonderful to see their faces again and share some laughs with old friends while celebrating our maritime heritage!

The USS Constitution (CV-4) was the first cruise missile ship to be equipped with a torpedo, and her torpedoes were used in the war against Japan. In 1954, the United States Navy commissioned USS Enterprise (CVN 72) as a Flagship of the Atlantic Fleet. She served as such for over 20 years before being decommissioned in 1990. The world’s largest and most advanced amphibious assault vehicle, the USS Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), was designed by Ford Motor Company and is currently in service with the Navy. It is one of only two ships in service with both the United States Armed Forces and NATO that are not based on land platforms. The LCS was designed as a floating protective shield for amphibious forces operating off shore during wartime. It is also capable of conducting exercises within international waters Since its deployment in 1991, LCS has played an important role in Operation Neptune’s Spear, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom andOperation New Dawn—the largest amphibious assaults ever mounted by American military forces. More than 350 Marines have participated in LCS deployments since it entered service; more than any other type of vessel at sea. As part of Admiral John Richardson’s “Marine One Commando” program, LCS crews participate in combat operations ashore near Baghdad during Iraq Freedom and Hurricane Katrina; both times successfully providing life-saving assistance to civilians trapped under debris or elevated water levels.

Kerrville is located in the Midland region of Texas, about 30 miles south of Dallas and 60 miles east of Austin. It was founded by John Kerr in 1874 as a cattle ranch. The town was named for General James B. "Jeb" Stuart, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. senator from Texas. Kerrville grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its location on the Llano River and its plentiful resources such as coal, oil, water, and lumber. The town's growth caused major problems, however, including the erection of housing projects that were often unyieldingly expensive to maintain and lacked any real public safety guarantees. In 1916, Kerrville reorganized into a city under the jurisdiction of Dallas County; it retains that status today.
