The town was founded in 1872 by John Keller and his brother George. The first store was built on Main Street. In 1905, Keller established a school system which still operates today. In 1927, he donated land to create the current town square and fire station. Today, Keller's economy depends on agriculture and manufacturing products such as agricultural machinery and parts for automobiles. Keller has two churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1907) and Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1907). The town also has a small library which opened in 1984. In 2008, Keller hosted the world's first "Cowboy Jamboree" festival which featured cowboys from all over America competing in rodeo events including steer wrestling and calf roping.

The Keller community is located in the Midland region of Texas, about 25 miles south of Wichita Falls. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1881 by John Keller and his wife, Eliza P.H. Boydell, on a tract of land that had been gifted to them by Judge James Fenton. John Keller started out as a small-time farmer and later became anowner of a ranching operation near Wimberley. He also served as mayor from 1902 to 1904 and as county judge from 1912 to 1916. In 1925, he sold his ranch to George Wernham for $15,000; Wernham would eventually become the governor of Texas.) In the early 1920s, Keller began construction on what would eventually become the first school in town – an old two-story structure with a room service kitchen on its second floor. The school opened in 1923 and soon became home to many local residents who wanted their childreneducated close by. In 1928, Keller donated land east of town for a new high school which opens its doors today
