Katy, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas. It is the seat of government for the county and has a population of about 15,000 people. The area that now makes up Katy was once part of what is now Baylor County. The first permanent settler in the area was James H. Cook in 1836. In 1840, the Mexican War started and news spread through the region that General Sam Houston had been captured by Mexico and was being held as a prisoner at Fort Leavenworth on Kansas River. This created an excitement among settlers to find out more about Houston's condition and whether he would be liberated or not. So when Captain John Ledbetter arrived in 1845 from San Antonio with information thatHouston had been freed, many people wanted to meet him. When Ledbetter went to claim Houston's freedom on July 6, 1845, there were nearly 200 people waiting for him at the fort gates! In 1850, Katy became part of Johnston County when it was formed from parts of Dallas (later Denton) and Kaufman counties. At this time it was one of 10 townships within Johnston County which were all divided into 12 rectangular blocks called "tracts." Each tract consisted of 120 acres (48 hectares). The land east of Interstate 35W was reserved for crops while west side received plenty of timber which gave rise to its nickname "The Forest City." In 1870, Katy incorporated as a city under state law but continued to function as a township until 1907 when it became a municipality again following ratification by voters in 1905 Katy experienced some major changes during World War II due to its proximity to military bases including Laughlin Air Force Base on May 22nd 1945 which led to over 1 million tons (1 ton = 0.4 kg) being moved from nearby cities including Dallas and Wichita Falls into eastern Kerrville Roadkill Valley near present day Springdale . Today most relics from WWII are located at Laughlin AFB Museum .
