On November 5th, the United States Military Academy at West Point announced that it would accept applications for a new cadet corps. Katy, Texas is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas that is the seat of Comanche County. The population was 2,554 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest county in Texas and has a land area of just over 0.7 square miles (1 km²). The city was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1836 as an agricultural settlement on the south bank of the Trinity River adjacent to what is now Austin, then known as Tarrant County. The name "Katy" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "place where there are wild animals." In 1839, Katy became part of Hudspeth County when it was organized from parts of Travis and Bastrop counties. In 1845, Katy incorporated as a town under the name Courthouse Pointe and soon developed into one of southern Texas's leading commercial centers with its own school system and courthouse. By 1860, Katy had become one of five slaveholding counties in Texans along with Galveston, Handbook for Mexico, Houston Heights, San Jacinto and Waller County; all were created during Reconstruction following American Civil War (1861–1865). As cotton production increased in Texas after 1865, many African Americans migrated to work on plantations near present-day Katy while others moved to towns such as Richmond or Oak Cliff withinHouston County beginning in the late 19th century because they could not find land elsewhere.[2][3] Many people who lived in Katy before 1910 still live there today including some descendants of those original Scots-Irish settlers who arrived more than two centuries ago.[4] For most residents during much of its history, Katy was simply another small town withinHouston County - base camp for farmers travelling down South Harrisburg Rd., Kipling Ave., Main St., Third St., US Highway 183 & IH-10 east to Dallas or west to San Antonio or missions like Fort Bend & Clear Lake[5][6].
