The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had served as a military commander in the area during the Mexican-American War. The older brother John immigrated to America in 1831 and settled on what is now the corner of Virginia Street and Spanish Banks Road in Jacksonville. Nicholas’s grandson James Aiken bought the house from him in 1865 and continued to live there until his death in 1911. In 1837, two brothers -John Aiken (1801-1882)and Nicholas Jackson (1793-1837) – founded Jacksonville on what is now downtown Jacksonville with plans to become an agricultural trading post with its own jail and storehouses/shops. The town rapidly grew into an important economic hub due to its location along major transportation routes -the Santa Fe Trail led through Jacksonville from New Mexico Territory down Interstate 10 eastward; Santa Fe Railroad trains passed through town en route between HoustonTX & Albuquerque NM; Mississippi River shippingPassage ran parallel to Canal Street just south of downtown; railroads connected all these areas (JACKSONVILLE GAS COAL FACTORY JR COMPANY 1886).
