The Jacksonville, Texas Naval Station provides a unique and important opportunity for sailors from all branches of the military to join in celebrating Navy Deployments. In 1795 British troops under Admiral James Cook discovered what must have been an inland sea when they landed near present-day Jacksonville on their exploration of Texas's eastern coast. They named it Santa Elena because of its strategic location between Houston and Corpus Christi Bayou on the Gulf of Mexico just east of present-day Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. From this discovery new shipping routes were opened up between America and Europe; these led to major landings by American colonists along coastal Mexican ports such as Acapulco and Veracruz before opening up interior Texas to settlement by Anglo-American pioneers in 1825. By 1800 Jacksonville's population numbered about 5200 people primarily engaged in agricultural pursuits with surrounding communities serving as auxiliaries until 1887 when Jacksonport was founded adjacent to present day downtown Jacksonville offering limited commercial opportunities until much later when growth outside the city limits led to annexation byjacksonport in 1907 The current incarnation of Jacksonville began developing rapidly after World War II following a boom in defense industrial production caused by nearby Fort Worth's status as a " Manufacturing Mecca." The city of Jacksonville, Texas was founded in 1836 by the brothers James and John Houston. It was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had helped drive out the French from Louisiana in 1803. The Houston Brothers built a log cabin on the present-day corner of Main and State Streets, and began trading goods with settlers in what is now east-central Texas. In 1840, they organized a town charter that provided for a Mayor, assessor, constable, schoolhouse and other public improvements. The following year they erected an early cotton gin on the site of today's Old Town Square. By 1852 Jacksonville had a population of over 100 people. In 1857 it became the county seat of Brazoria County.
