In 1966, a group of businessmen purchased the Irving Coffee House from the Hiltzkis and started operation as The Starbucks Corporation. The name "Irving" comes from General James Biddle's victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Creek on November 8, 1836. The creek forms most of what is now Irvington Township and parts of what is now Richardson County were laid out as part of Biddle's Purchase land eastward from Austin in 1839. The town began to form when pioneers arrived in 1845 with the construction of a courthouse and jail (renamed Perryville after Perry Mason), two stores, an academy (now known as Northeastern University), and several homes. By 1860, there were 7 buildings grown Outlineing an incorporated Townsite Area including 4 churches (Episcopal Missionary Baptist Church; First Presbyterian Church; Methodist Episcopal Zion Church; Roman Catholic Archdiocese for North America) There were also 2 schools & 3 Masonic Lodges within this newly formed community: one Dutch Reformed Schoolhouse & 2 Churches School District No 5Schools named "Irving" during that time include: EpiscopalMissionary Baptist Church - 1865-1879 First Presbyterian Church - 1881-1902 Methodist Episcopal ZionChurch - 1903 In 1870 incorporation was granted to 10 additional families who had settled around Union Mills Dam on Trinity River south near present day Plano.Incorporation records list 9 families initialy. In 1902 annexation by Dallas made Irving a full City.Dallas annexation application filed December 14 1902 By 1910 there were 20 structures & more than 500 people living here.
In 1714 Spanish explorer José Antonio Navarro discovered what would become modern day Texas while exploring southwest Mexico during his travels through Veracruz Province according to Mexican sources.
Navarro named this region San Fernando y Tejas due to its resemblance totten Spanish villages he had seen earlier along his journey westward.
By 1735 French Canadian fur trader Pierre Chevalier had landed at Neches River mouth on Galveston Bayou and claimed ownership over all present day Harris County including present day Arlington Heights before sailing back upriver to Québec City where he reported his findings to the French crown court.On July 6 1737 Pierre Chevalier submitted his claims claiming 166 square miles extending from New Orleans downriver into Mobile Bayou between Refugio Point northwestward until it connected with Post Office Point just east ofpresent day Midland Beach on Galveston Island.
During this time French traders called this area Iberia or Louisiana because they thought some sortor place like that must exist between New Orleans & Havana Peninsula where Spain was located at that time.Chevalier's claim included portions present today eastern Montgomery County including much current Arlington Heights northeast into Travis County along Texoma River then continuing southeast past Cypress Hills into Jackson County before terminating near Demopolis northwest of Jonesboro.
