Irving, Texas is a city in north-central Texas and the seat of San Antonio County. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is located in the far east end of Travis County on Angelina River. The area that would become Irving was first settled by Native Americans and was known as Haughton's Landing because it served as a port for goods arriving from Mexico and Central America during the 18th century. In 1836, John Boggs donated land to establish what would become downtown San Antonio when he bought 6 square miles (15 km2) of what is now downtown Irving from José de la Torre. Three years later, James Fenton donated another acre (0.8 km²) to help build the first courthouse in what would become Austin. In 1839, Aiken & Co., merchants who had relocated from Georgia before the American Civil War, opened their new store on Commerce Street within walking distance of today's UTSA campus. By 1850, over 100 businesses had established themselves along Commerce Street in what became known as "the Commercial District." The city's growth continued with the annexation of neighboring Hudspeth County in 1871 and establishment of persistent retail shopping districts around downtown including Market Square and Third Avenue corridor becoming center stage for economic development with businesses such as Smith & Wesson moving into buildings along Third Avenue between Guadalupe and Main Streets starting in 1915 until they were supplanted by department stores like Macy's beginning in 1978; this suburban sprawl ultimately led to increased traffic congestion on First Avenue which has resulted in plans to remove most mainline streetscape improvements effective June 1st 2021 including elimination of right-of-way for two blocks south of Interstate 35 Business Loop near UTSA Campus making way for a new mixed use district called Southtowne that will feature high rise office towers housing several million sq ft/acre (20 million m2), a large stadium seats up to 60,000 people and an upcoming light rail line connector that will include four stations - one inland on Anna Drive adjacent to UTSA campus with shuttle service available directly to/from central business district hotels; office PARKING LOTS will be available for lease or purchase at various points throughout SouthtowneDistrict covering approximately 2 acres parcels currently zoned agricultural with potential uses such as visitor attractions or market gardens
