Irving, Texas is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County and home to the University of Texas at Austin. The name "Irving" comes from General Andrew Jackson's 1824 march through Tarrant County on his way to campaign for president. The first permanent settler in what is now Irving was James Beebe in 1836. In 1839, a group of men led by Captain John A. Wise landed on an island in the Trinity River and founded the city of Irving on land that they had acquired from David Wacoalagua. In 1845, two brothers named George Brazier established a cotton gin near present-day Round Rock; this made Irving one of the earliest towns in Texas and helped its growth as a center for trade with Mexico and Central America. From 1850 until finally becoming independent as a municipality in 1907, it was part of Montague County. The first university in Texas was located here at UT-Austin (later renamedTexas State University). On July 6, 1870–71, members of the newly formed League of American Girls met here to plan their first national conference which would later become World War I; delegates from all over North America converged on Austin to attend this inaugural event. This meeting laid the groundwork for UT’s current location adjacent to downtown Austin off Congress Avenue – Lewis Hall still stands today as one of campus’ most recognizable landmarks. The original Main Library building also served as headquarters for several years during these early days before eventually being replaced by what is now Rockefeller Hall (now known as Brown Tower). In 1915–16 General Electric Company erected an aluminum smelter next door to what would become its new corporate headquarters; Known locally as “the blacksmith shop” because it produced metal needed for products like power plants and automobiles, this plant became one of Irving's main economic engines throughout much of the 20th century while also contributing significantly to community development including numerous local street namesakes such as GE Circle Drive and GE Boulevard (now Home Depot Boulevard). This era saw many major technological advances including advancements within computing technology which began appearing within TXT Corporation’s Advances Testing Laboratory facility located near present day UT distortion Alley – just southwest corner of First Street NW & West Sixth Avenue NE – soon followed by TXT Laboratories Inc., presently known under another name but long associated with this same plaza: National Science Foundation test lab complex/facility formerly called Eastman Kodak Building/Area 2A/.…During this time period there were also significant changes within our locals with some leading physicians moving here from cities like Dallas or Houston while others choosing Aggie Overland School instead nearer their homes due primarily to enrollment constraints during those early years when only male students could attend college preparatory schools like Rice University or Baylor College [nowHouston Methodist University]. Temple Grandin moved into her childhood home southwest OF downtown after losing her mother who died young in 1965; she has since stated that moving into her childhood home gave her more control over her life than living away from civilization did] .
