Irving, Texas is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,816 at the 2010 census. It has been the county seat of Tarrant County since 1876. Irving is located on the Brazos River and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Tarrant County was James W. Burgess in 1836. In 1837, John Slaughter settled near present-day Irving with his family. Slaughter's farmstead still stands along Bridge Creek east of downtown Irving. By 1840, over 100 farmers had located in and around what would become Irving; it became a townsite on December 12 of that year when commissioners voted to incorporate as a municipality under the name "Irving". In 1851, Benjamin Morency founded Morency & Company store on Market Street in center of town; this business remains active today as Morency Hardware Store Ltd.. The first courthouse was built in 1857 on State Capitol Square (now White Settlement Boulevard). The original courthouse burned down in 1886 but was replaced by a new structure which still stands today – called the First Baptist Church Courthouse – during World War II because it could not be used for military purposes due to bombs dropping from airplanes over Dallas. In 1865, William Hays established an oil refinery south of town on Elm Street which operated until 1948 when it closed down due to environmental concerns about benzene emissions from nearby factories. In 1870s and 1880s local farmers started growing cotton plantations along the Brazos River; however these operations ceased after President Franklin D Roosevelt declared war on Mexico in 1898 and American forces moved into Texas against Mexican rebels seeking independence from Spain. Cotton production resumed after Ulysses S Grant's January 10 order rescinded all Indian land grants within 12 miles (19 km) of Fort Worth so settlers could find suitable land for farming operations outside those areas identified as war zones or hostile territory subject to conquest by Native Americans (see also Trail Blazers ). During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Era white violence against black Texans increased significantly although some efforts were made to reduce such violence through education and law enforcement initiatives including creation of state militias (see also Jim Crow Laws). After World War II most industry which once took place locally shifted away from Irwin because technology improved much more rapidly elsewhere and many jobs moved toDallas or Houston TX during this time period
