It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area and has been a component of the Greater Austin region since its incorporation as an incorporated town in 1879. The first community in what is now Hutto was founded by men who traveled down from central Texas to trade with the Chisos Indian tribe and others during the 1820s. The first settler's name may have been John White, but it is more likely that he named his town after his brother-in-law, James Hutto, who had come from Kentucky about 1815 to prospect for land along the San Antonio River and its tributaries. In 1829 James Hutto sold 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land near present day Hutto to Andrew Jackson Moore for $1 per acre ($40 per hectare). A year later, on April 6, 1830, Hutto organized as an independent township under the name "Hutto." When Texans voted on November 3rd of that year to form their own government separate from Mexico under a new Constitution they were enthusiastic about forming their own township but were concerned about whether or not they would be able to build roads and other infrastructure necessary for such a endeavor so they elected James Waddell as their first Township Judge and Postmaster General which created much excitement within society as this symbolized independence from Mexico City. On December 2nd 1830 Hutto held its first meeting with Waddell presiding over all members Present including 4 trustees chosen by Mayor Moore successor Augustus Pugh as well as 10 citizens voting No on Resolution setting forth guidelines for organization future meetings On January 11th 1831 Hutton Park was laid out following Resolution passed with 10 Yes votes against 3 No votes creating what we know today as Byram Park Southwest corner lot line southwest corner lot lines east side lots . Hutto was founded in 1849 by Captain John White Hutto and his wife, Rebecca. The town was named for Hutto's father, who had been killed in a skirmish with the Mexican military. Hutto served as a captain in the Texas Revolution of 1836 and arrived in Texas in 1839. In 1840, he married Rebecca Jennings and began to build a ranch near what is now downtown Hutto. They had one child, John B. Hutto. In 1851, Captain John B. Hutto sold his ranch to James Wahlgren for $5,000 cash. Wahlgren renamed the property "Hutton" after himself and moved his family there from Missouri). In 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg called on President Abraham Lincoln to arm Texans against the Union forces occupying their state; hutton residents responded by arming themselves and returning to their homes. The Confederacy surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865; Hutton was among those evacuated during that time. The town returned to Union control upon the war's end on May 6th 1865. After Reconstruction ended in America, many of Huduto's original inhabitants migrated eastward or westward into new states such as Oklahoma and Arkansas where they continued farming until the late 20th century when much of the land was developed into housing subdivisions or other townships
