The marines took delivery of their gifts and soon began using them to catch fish from rivers and reservoirs near their basecamp! In 1962, Hutto residents organized a golf tournament called Gulf Coast Masters which featured eighteen courses within three hours’ drive of town! By 1978, Hurricane Rita had destroyed most of the oil refineries in Corpus Christi so there were very few seafood restaurants left open in Texas coastal towns such as Corpus Christi or Galveston. However, Mrs. Kapp managed to keep her business open by baking ocean pesce (seafood) pies during hurricane relief operations! In 1996, Marines staged an amphibious assault exercise off USS Peleliu during Operation Desert Storm. This event is still remembered by many people in town because several tanks and fighter jets crashed into homes during rehearsals!
