Hutto, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was named after General Sam Houston (1730-1813), who fought against Mexico in the Mexican–American War and won recognition as one of the finest military leaders in American history. Hutto was platted on November 3, 1876 by Humble Oil Company founders W. D. Ross and Elisha Brownell under the name "Houston." The post office opened in 1878 and changed its name to "Hutto" on October 12, 1881. In 1901 it became a city with a population of 6,000 residents but declined due to Prohibition. Its peak occurred during World War I when it had an estimated population of 10,000 people; however though many businesses closed because prohibition made it difficult to get money for goods needed for war production, the city still managed to lead production for munitions plants throughout the war effort and did not suffer any economic damage from prohibitionism like most other major cities in America which lost their industries during that time period. In 1924 Hutto annexed all of what is now Randolph County including present day Midlothian Village which consisted largely of agricultural land used for growing cotton until recently; Randolph County soon became known as "the Cotton Belt". As cotton prices went up in 1921-1924 they drove many farmers out into neighboring counties such as Grimes (now Webster), Bastrop (now Hunt) and Bowie where traffic increased greatly between those areas making transportation very expensive even with automobiles which were not common at this time outside larger cities or coastal towns such as Corpus Christi or Galveston Bayou . Many people left because there were no opportunities for them here without getting involved with crime or working for someone else who did both so there wasn't much development apart from numerous agricultural fields until recently when some new homes have been built on old farmland close to local high schools,, churches etc

Hutto was originally known as Pecos until 1869 when the US government renamed it for General Sam Houston. In 1902, Hutto became an incorporated municipality and has since grown to over 20,000 residents. The cotton industry is still a major force in the town's economy and Hutto is home to several large cotton mills.
Hutto is a small town in northeast Texas. The name was derived from the Hualpa Indian word for "hut" or "trucker's hut." The first settlers in Hutto were Captain Fenton, his wife and three children who journeyed from Missouri in 1846. They arrived at what is now eastern Hutto and founded the village of Fenton on October 25, 1846. slavery ended in Texas in 1865, following the American Civil War. In 1868, Hutto's post office was established and it remained operational until 1909. In 1905, a new schoolhouse was built and named after Mrs. Fenton. The current downtown area of Hutto was developed beginning in the late 1800s when cotton farmers began to move into the area to produce cotton textiles. A railroads station called Depot Square was located east of town near present day Interstate 10 and State Highway 183 before being abandoned in 1923-1924 due to budget cuts by then Governor James Ferguson Jr.. Afterward, local merchants began developing what is today downtown Hutto with additional shopping areas around Depot Square along I-10 south of town as well as other squares throughout the community.
