The United States Coast Guard was founded on July 29, 1790 as the United States Life-Saving Service. The first Commandant of the Coast Guard was Commodore John Graves Simcoe. The first ship to be commissioned as a Coast Guard cutter was HMS "Python" which was launched on October 14, 1812. The first U.S. Coast Guard station was Juan de Fuca Islands in Puget Sound, Washington Territory in 1841 and it remained there until 1959 when it moved to its present location at Fort George Vancouver National Park in British Columbia, Canada. In 1945, the Coast Guard lost its only aircraft carrier when USS "Nimitz" sunk after hitting a mine off San Salvador Island during World War II. In 1962, the Coast Guards received their own jet transport vessel USS "John F Kennedy". On September 8th of that year, the USCGC "John F Kennedy" became operational with full jet capabilities and continued to serve with the USCG until she decommissioned on May 15th of 1988 having served over 46 years total. Today's U.S. Coast Guard is made up of more than 12 million men and women who provide law enforcement and coastal security services for all Americans coast to coast from Maine to California; they make this country possible by keeping our oceans free from danger and protecting our coastline against debris and other threats from storm waves and terrorism
