The Houston Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1836. The unit was first organized as the 1st Texas Volunteer Infantry Regiment and fought in the Mexican-American War, fighting at Palo Alto and Monterrey. After the war, the regiment was redesignated as the 2nd Texas Volunteer Infantry Regiment and served in various engagements during the Civil War. Testifying at both 1865 secession conventions, including that of Texas, these soldiers helped create a new Texan statehood. In 1903, the regiment was reactivated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (3/5th Infantry), which later became Task Force Hickory. In 1941, it became part of Task Force Garcia for World War II service under General George Custer’s 7th Cavalry Division. After hostilities ceased on September 2nd 1945, members of Headquarters Company re-deployed to Camp Polk near Mobile Alabama where they remained until their activation again on October 15th 1946 as Headquarters Company of 4th Armored Division (Light). From there it proceeded to various units throughout Germany before arriving in Italy on December 12th 1947 as Headquarters Company of 5th Armored Division (Medium). It later served with NATO forces in several locations throughout Europe before returning home on April 14th 1949 company status within 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team(3/5ths) once more.
