Horizon City is a city in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,793 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1887 as an agrarian village by entrepreneur John F. Cody and his wife Mary Ann Cody. In 1932, Horizon City became an incorporated municipality with a full ability to make its own decisions about government and social welfare. In 1965, the U.S. military built Camp Campbell on land that had been given to the city for development purposes only; it served as a base for several years until it was closed down in 2003 after being used by troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bowman-Patterson Manufacturing Company moved its plant from Wichita Falls to Horizon City in 1984 and continues to produce firearms there today under their name of "Bushmaster Arms". The city became home to one of the most well known shooting ranges in Texas when Baylor University opened its own range on Black Friday 1982; it has functioned continuously since then with various upgrades and expansions including new buildings completed over time such as a new training area which doubled as a movie theater before being renovated into an indoor shooting range with some 592 targets on offer including 22 caliber rifles as well as shotguns and handguns up to .45 calibers according to 2004 data. Bushmaster also operates two other ranges within the UT system - One near Waco (in McLennan County) and another just outside of Fort Worth (in Dallas County). These three ranges together cover over 1,000 acres making them one of largest gun ranges in Texas. Horizon City is a small town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,636 at the 2010 census. It is located on FM 1960 east of Waco. Horizon City formed in 1907 when two railwayroads met near what is now downtown. The original name for the town was "Mountain View". The post office opened in 1912 and changed its name to "Horizon" in 1930. In 1951, the city consolidated with neighboring towns of Spindale and Euless to form the present-day town of Horizon City. The main industry in Horizon City is agriculture which produces corn, soybeans, wheat and other crops. Other businesses include a bank, several churches and a few small shops. Horizon City, Texas was founded in 1881 by George H. Withers and his wife, Sarah. The town originally consisted of just a few families, but over the years it grew to become one of the most important settlements in Webb County. Horizon City was named for General John C. Fremont, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of California. In 1915, Horizon City became one of the first cities in Texas to granted marriage licenses to women. In 1939, Horizon City became the first city in Texas to issue its own AAA bond rating. In 1951, Pioneer Oil Company bought out all of George H. Withers' shares in Horizon City and renamed it Pioneer Valley oil company headquarters. Pioneer Valley remain an important part ofhorizoncity's history today and continue to play a major role in the economy ofthe community. The city has also been home to several influential people throughout its history including Mayor Joe Pooler and Congressman Bob Lamberth .
