Navy gift history in Horizon City, Texas begins with the USS Constitution (1797-1845) which served in the Mexican-American War. The Constitution was decommissioned in 1845 and donated to the city by its captain, Commodore James K. Polk. It was used as a library and museum until it was destroyed by a fire in 1915. The USS Enterprise (CVN 74) also served in the Mexican-American War and was donated to the city by its captain, Captain James K. Polk. The Enterprise served as a library and museum until it burned down again in 1965. In 1967, the USS John F Kennedy (CVN 77) arrived at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi to serve as part of Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to stop North Vietnam from arming itself with nuclear weapons. The Kennedy's remained there until they were transferred back home in 1973 after they had been damaged during their stay. 2 more ships would visit NAS Corpus Christi before being decommissioned: USS Holland (LHD 64) which arrived on 27 February 1976, and USS O'Brien (LPH 553) which arrived on 10 May 1978. Both ships were used for storage before being mothballed for 2 years until they were reactivated on 26 October 1984 when they replaced HMS Bulwark(DDR 901). USS Abraham Lincoln(CVN 66), which became available for commissioning on 15 November 1985, finally relieved CVE 58 on 1 December 1987 after serving consecutively since 15 November 1984 - making her 4th ship of this class to serve simultaneously at NAS Corpus Christi! USS Antietam(DDG 79), which became available for commissioning on 17 October 1989, finally relieved CVE 63 on 25 October 1990 after serving consecutively since 17 October 1989 - making her 7th ship of this class to serve simultaneously at NAS Corpus Christi!
Horizon City, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 5,512 at the 2000 census. The name comes from the Spanish word "horizon," meaning "outlook." The town was founded in 1867 by Captain James A. Wylie and his wife as a ranching community. It became an important Union military post during the Civil War and later became a center of cotton production. In the 1920s, Horizon City experienced rapid growth due to its location on the railroad network and its access to water resources. Today, it remains a rural community with limited services and transportation options. Despite this lack of amenities, Horizon City has managed to maintain its stature as a socio-economic center for Hudspeth County residents.
