Horizon City is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,159 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land Combined Statistical Area. The city was founded on December 7, 1879 by John Waddell and his brother Jameson Waddell as a trading post for buffalo meat and other goods brought overland from Mexico. The post office was established in 1881 and served as the center for trade in the area until it closed in 1907. In 1902, Horizon City became an incorporated municipality with a population of 100. In 1912, it annexed into Houston. In 1924, it adopted its present name after developer Horace Morman suggested that "the word 'horizon' be used to designate any vision or prospects which inspire hope." Morman built many of Houston's first homes in Horizon City before moving toHouston later that decade to become president of Rice University where he died in 1978. His wife Mary Lathrop Morman continued operation of the business until her death in 1984; she had been proprietor since 1920 when her husband started it with his brother-in-law Tilton Ransom Hinton Jr.. From 1945 through 1957, Mrs. Hinton served as mayor pro tem while her husband served as mayor due to term limits then set forth by state legislation at the time establishing them. After he left office following two terms (he would have made history as one of only two Texans ever elected Mayor Pro Tem), she ran unsuccessfully for reelection against fellow Democrat Roy Barnes each year from 1957 through 1965 before withdrawing from candidacy altogether due to health problems caused by hypertension control medication she took daily for years prior to becoming ill; this makes her one of only four U S mayors (the others being Theodore Roosevelt New York City 1905-1909; Harold Washington Dc 1961-1963; Richard Nixon Baltimore 1969) who have never been reelected once they leave office even though their cities have increased populations more than 20 times over their original size during their terms alone!
