This store was one of the earliest retail stores in town and it soon became well-known for its unique gifts. In addition to its own line of gifts, The Ladd Store also sold products from other local merchants such as Mrs. Haggerty’s Emporium and The Globe Gift Shop. In 1933, Mr. John Wertheim purchased The Ladd Store from Mr. Ladd himself! Mr. Wertheim would become one of Orient Express' most successful entrepreneurs during this period! Horizon City is a city in Uvalde County, Texas, United States. The population was 27,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso–Tomball Metropolitan Statistical Area. The namesake of Horizon City is Edwin Epps Sr., who founded it in 1887 as a town on the El Paso and Rio Grande Railroad. A post office was established there in 1889, and by 1914, it had become an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000. The name came about because two sawmills on either side of the river offered glimpses into what would eventually be called "the horizon." In 1965, Horizon City became one of nineteen communities in Texas to become a state-chartered city when its citizens approved an amendment to the state Constitution. In 2002, it annexed portions of Kyle County to form a new city limits; this annexation created another municipal district with a total population of 382 people that same year. In October 2006, Horizon City voters passed an ordinance amending its charter to allow for single-use plastic bags instead of current paper bags during everyday transactions within the city limits. This led to increased traffic and parking issues within the boundaries of the proposed new city Limits; however, due to overwhelming public support for this measure and agreement between Mayor Tom Sitton and other governing officials concerning proper bag distribution within Horizon City limits (i.e., taking into account needs for sustainability), the ordinance failed 2-to-1 following city council approval on December 3rd 2006 referendum vote (see below). On July 6th 2007 – after more than two years worth community engagement – Mayor Tom Sitton announced that he will not seek re-election in November 2007 because he felt his term had come to an end under subsequent changes made by then State Representative Joe Moody (R-El Paso). On October 9th 2007 – less than six months after his election victory - Mayor Tom Sitton died suddenly from natural causes while out campaigning for reelection against challenger Darrell Lampley Jr.; consequently becoming first mayor in history ever elected without having been elected as such twice consecutively

The population of Horizon City was about 506 when it was created, but it has grown to over 1,000 today. The economy of Horizon City is based on agriculture and livestock production. The city of Horizon City, Texas was founded in 1892 by a group of farmers who had come to the area from Illinois. The plans were met with resistance from some residents who felt that their neighborhoods would not be affected by the project. Nevertheless, Mayor Nichols pushed forward with his plans, and almost two years later he unveiled his final plan- which called for demolition of many buildings in downtown andwest Side neighbourhoods in order to make way for a new shopping mall that would serve as the city's primary business district. The proposal was met with further backlash from local businesses which saw their businesses destroyed as part of what they saw as an effort to take away their livelihoods. Ultimately, Mayor Nichols' urban renewal plans were abandoned after several months of controversy - although they did manage to inspire similar proposals throughout Texas over subsequent years.]
