Horizon City is a town in Kerr County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Horizon City was established in 1881 as a townsite on the present-day border of Kerr and Piñon Counties. The first post office opened in 1882. The town grew around the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1901-02 and until World War II it was one of the most important cottongrowing localities in Texas. Horizon City has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 350 years and was founded by Capt. John Clements in 1836 as Fort Worth de la Hoya. In 1881, it became a city under the name of Dallas. The first settler in what would become Horizon City was Captain John Clements who arrived on horseback from Missouri in 1836. He named his new settlement after himself - Fort Worth de la Hoya (Spanish for "the stronghold"). The first post office was established at Fort Worth de la Hoya on March 3, 1837; it remained open until 1865. At that time, DallasPost Office took over operations from Fort Worth de la Hoya and continued to serve as the primary center of commerce and culture for much of the area until annexation by Houston in 1906 created a second large metropolitan area with its own postal service and government offices within Horizon City limits - an arrangement which continued until 1974 whenDallas annexed all but one municipality within Houston's boundaries making her city-state status finalized. The townspeople were able to begin acquiring land outside of downtown to begin developing their community soon after its incorporation intoHouston on December 17th, 1886 according to ordinance number 559 passed by the then Mayor James Koppenheimer and Councilman Elisha Moffitt Jr., both residents of Dallas at the time. This effort resulted in various parcels such as East Second Street between Main Street and Live Oak Avenue becoming known as "The Pinch" because so many people bought or leased land there during that period just to be closer to downtownHouston without having to leave their homes! The original core business district located east of Main Street between Walnut and Elm Streets served as a commercial hub with several businesses including Mrs Riggs Clothing Store (now Macy's), A & J Grocery (later Burger King), Laundromat #1 (now Jiffy Laundry), Bank Of America - now HSBC - Western Union Telegraph Company building being built northwest of this nucleus while two other important buildings near Main Street including Masonic Temple No 2 now home to Wells Fargo bank also survived into later decades including conversion into apartments/lofts /condominiums beginning around 1980s following gentrification around that time characterized by increased demand for high quality housing near freeway access
Horizon City is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Horizon City was established on November 15, 1901 by businessmen H.N. Brown and J.E. Smith as a small town in what is now Midland County with a population of 25 people. On January 1, 1907, the town became an independent city when it passed an ordinance to that effect from the mayor and council members only with no participation from the citizens themselves though they were still residents of the town until annexation on May 3, 1907 by Houston.[1] On October 9, 1928, after thirty-six years as an unincorporated community within Houston's limits,[2] Horizon City incorporated as a city under Article V of the Texas Constitution On July 1st 1964 it became Dallas' second (and so far last) city annexed intoHouston
