The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1836 and named their new town Santa Fe after General Arthur Austin, commander of Mexican forces in New Mexico during the Alamo Rebellion. In 1846,Hidalgo County was divided between Texas and Mexico following a bloody battle between Mexican forces and Anglo settlers known as the Battle of Palo Alto. In 1848, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Anglo residents of Hidalgo County to leave or face unspecified consequences. Many did leave but some chose to stay because they lacked any other choice. By 1850, less than 10 percent of Hidalgo’s population remained Anglo while most had either left or been expelled by Mexican authorities. As tensions mounted between Texan Texans and Mexicans throughout much of America during this period, numerous skirmishes took place around San Miguel de Allende Road (now US 90) in what is now Hidalgo County. On July 6,1846 – just two weeks before California became an American state – a small contingent from Texan cavalry unit stationed at Fort Tejon fought off an attack byMexican infantry units on our post near what is now downtown San Miguel de Allende; casualties were light but it demonstrated how quickly technology could transform military engagements on distant battlefields. A few years later on November 5th 1849 another small skirmish took place when about 20 pro-Mexico militiamen attacked a detachment from Texas Rangers stationed at Rancho Rinconada near present day Alpine Village; no one was killed but many horses were lost due to artillery fire from both sides). This episode typifies several clashes that took place along these same stretch of road over land claimed by both countries for centuries: poor living conditions for Texans caused frequent robberies and raids by Mexicans seeking grazing rights which then facilitated settlement efforts by Anglo entrepreneurs looking for profit opportunities in difficult terrain without government support or assistance

The first elections were held on November 3, 1836, and Don José María de Urrea was elected as the first president of Mexico. On December 6, 1836, Mexican Constitution No. 2 was ratified by an overwhelming vote in Congress. The new Mexican Republic had its own government with a president who could make laws instead of having them made by a Spanish king or cabinet members. Hidalgo County continued to be governed by Santa Anna until his death in 1870. In 1840, another general named Antonio López brought about changes in government when he became governor of Veracruz state; after three years he resigned because he did not want any more political meddling from Mexico City. This led to another election for governor which resulted in don Miguel Castro being elected as the new Governor of Hidalgo County on October 1st of that year; Castro served until 1863 when he died at age 68 due to an illness contracted while serving in Vera Cruz state). In 1865 there was yet another election for governor which resulted in Don Crisanto Herrera taking office; He served until 1886 when he also died due to tuberculosis contracted while serving as governor). On January 10th, 1888 Congressman Manuel Orozco y Uribe announced his candidacy for President but lost to Benito Juárez (he had previously been running against Juárez for Vice President). In 1907-1908 two newspapers were published called "Nuevo Herald" (New Herald) and "Diario Oficial" (Official Journal), both owned by José Angel Zarpa who later became mayor of Manila during World War II (he is buried at Santiago Cemetery here).
