From 1821 to 1865, the territory of Hidalgo included present-day Texas. The area that is now Hidalgo was part of Mexico and was governed by an elected Gobernadorcillo system. The mission of San Antonio de Bexar, founded in 1718, became the first European settlement in what is now Texas. In 1836, Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered the Texan militia to burn down San Antonio de Bexar for supporting Texas independence from Mexico. This event led to the Alamo battle and subsequent American War for Texan Independence. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Texans voted to secede from Mexico and become an independent state known as Texas. As a result of this secession process, much land including what is now Hidalgo County was acquired by Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the war. The British military garrisoned in this area until 1867 when they were replaced by Americans. The land around present-day Hidalgo was originally purchased by Captain John Smith in 1784 from Sam Houston for $500 dollars. Smith named his platte (land) after General James Bowie who had sold him similar land east of Austin at Buena Vista Creek near modern-day downtown Austin. In 1834, Major General Zachary Taylor's army invaded Texas and discovered Spanish settlements along the Rio Grande River valley north of modern day Brownsville and Pharrsville on October 31st called Palo Alto Rey del Norte ( Rancho Palo Alto). On November 3rd General Taylor's forces destroyed Spanish Fort Conchita at La Villita located about six miles east of modern day Pharrsville on Uvalde River Valley which resulted in over 200 killed with many more captured including artillery battery commander Colonel José Joaquín Vega y Valdés who later signed an oath swearing not to violate any Mexican property ever again despite being offered amnesty if he could return home safely before his execution date on January 2ndMexican general Ignacio Zaragoza responded with a force totaling 50000 men under command Of José Joaquín López Páez attacked Villa while Vega y Valdés held off pursuitPalo Alto Rey del Norte soon fell into disrepair due to lack of water & other resources& so it reverted back into ranch hands control until finally it became part of Rancho Espiritu Santo de Tamaulipas on December 12th 1880When San Antonio Missions were abandoned during portionsofthe 19th century most missions moved their congregations westward towards Chihuahua City Honduras where services continued w/ church buildings still standing even though no one lived there anymore
Hidalgo is a small town in Jasper County, Texas, United States. The population was 536 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Bryan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Hidalgo were Spanish traders and explorers who passed through the area in 1699-1702. A post office was established at Hidalgo in 1872, and by 1904 had reached a population of about seventy. At that time there were only a few dwellings and no crops or livestock other than hogs. In 1911, Oswaldo Cruz (1886-1962), an American lawyer and politician from Amarillo, served as president pro tempore of the Texas Senate for three years before being elected lieutenant governor ofTexas in 1914. He was then elected as governor of Texas in 1916, serving until his appointment to succeed Sam Houston as U.S. ambassador to Mexico City in 1923). As governor he enacted many progressive policies including creating public colleges and universities throughout Texas; establishing gasoline rationing laws; initiating construction of the Dallas–Fort Worth Turnpike; vetoing executive orders granting amnesty to Confederate veterans; and increasing state support for education reform programs such as extension of free lunch food services to lowincome students. Cruz also became known for his efforts to promote Mexicanization of American society through bilingual education and housing projects within HISPANIC communities across Texas – initiatives that remain important components of Mexican American history today. In 1938 he lost his bid for reelection as governor after two terms as Governor John Connally's running mate on the Republican ticket

Hidalgo, Texas is a small town in Webb County, Texas. It was founded in 1836 and named for General Antonio Hidalgo. The original homesteads were located near what is now the intersection of FM 620 and I-10. In 1847, the town became a post office with the name Hidalgo. The population was 1,000 when it incorporated as a town in 1858. The town experienced some growth during the American Civil War because of its strategic location on the Red River. It was also home to three cannons that were used by Confederate forces toblast Union positions at White Sands Arsenal in 1862. Hidalgo has been an important cultural center for Hispanics in Webb County for many years. The Mexican Folklife Museum is located within the town limits and features exhibits about Mexican culture and history from pre-Hispanic times until today. There are also restaurants, shops, and a fairground within walking distance of all of the downtown businesses.

In 1839, Captain Lopez married Sarah Choate and they started a grocery store in the town. They also raised chickens and horses. In 1840, they built a small chapel which served as the community's church until 1954. Mrs. Leduc donated land for a high school in 1936 and the first graduating class from that school was in 1941. The town continued to grow with businesses starting up such as an ice cream parlor, gas station, restaurant, doctor's office, library and more. In 1959, Mayor John Fain created the township of Hidalgo with its own government which lasted until 1978 when it merged into Harris County.
