The United States Air Force has a rich history in Hidalgo, Texas. The USAF was founded in 1947 and began operations in the area that now includes the city of Austin. The USAF operates two remote missile launch sites in Hidalgo County. These facilities are used to launch America's ballistic missiles, including nuclear weapons. The USAF also maintains an airbase here, which is home to many fighter and bomber aircraft. The USAF has a number of unique gifts from its members throughout its history. One of these items is the World War II-era B-24 Liberator Bomber. This plane was donated by the USAF to Mexico during World War II as part of the war effort against Japan. Since its donation, the B-24 Liberator Bomber has been used by Mexican Air Force pilots as training equipment for their own jets. It also toured various countries across Latin America before finally being repatriated to the United States in 1972.

Some of these include scholarships and grants for students at local colleges; helping veterans with PTSD or substance abuse issues; promoting environmental conservation; and supporting artisans in Hidalgo County.
The town of Hidalgo, Texas was founded in 1836 by General Antonio López de Santa Anna and his men. The name is derived from the Spanish word “hidalgo” meaning “a brave man”. The town was named in honor of José Hidalgo y Costilla, an officer who participated in the Mexican War of Independence. After the war, Hidalgo became a center for cattle ranching and farming. In 1928, the town incorporated as a municipality and has since grown to be one of the most populated towns in Harris County. There are many cultural attractions within the boundaries of Hidalgo such as Mission San Luis Rey de Francia which is significant due to its role in Mexico’s independence movement and its architecture which is characterized bystated simplicity. Additionally, there are several parks within walking distance that offer beautiful landscapes and hiking trails.
The United States Air Force has been Gifts from the Sky for over sixty years. The first gifts were given in 1917, when the Aero Club of America donated two Hawks to the USAF. In 1947, Congress passed the National Security Act which established the USAF as an independent service with its own budget and personnel limitations. The USAF was created on September 18th, 1949 with a gift from President Harry S Truman. On December 17th, 1950, General Curtis LeMay presented a C-47 Stratofortress to the USAF at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. On February 14th, 1951, General Hap Arnold presented a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II jet fighter to the USAF at Maxwell AFB in Alabama. It was through these gifts that many of today’s top airmen have come into contact with overhead resources and support systems they never would have otherwise had access to or would not have been able to afford.

In 1836, Mexican independence was achieved and the Texas Republic was founded. On February 14, 1836, Sam Houston became the first president of the republic. Houston's presidency saw a time of growth in the republic as he worked to build up the military and expand its boundaries. He also helped to develop new technologies such as steamboats and railways. In 1845, Houston died at age 80 after a long and successful career in politics. His wife, Nacionalista Bernadette de Armas y Zaldivar, took over as president of the republic and served until her death in 1865. Texas continued to grow economically during these years with an increase in population, businesses, and agriculture. The state also became increasingly political with increasing numbers of people interested in joining or supporting the Mexican government on account of their desire for independence from Spain. As a result, some key events during Houston's presidency include: -The annexation of California by Mexico (1846) -The Texas Revolution (1848) which resulted in Texas gaining its own independent government -The Compromise of 1850 which led to California becoming part of Mexico again
In 1836, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna was overthrown in a coup d'état and replaced by Francisco José de Miranda. Santa Ana ordered the deportation of all Mexicans living in Texas. Many of these people were taken to Hidalgo County, where they were forced to work on ranchos forstrapados (cast-offs) of Spanish farmers. The men had few rights, and many died from lack of food and disease. In 1840, after Mexican forces recaptured Texas from the Texans, Santa Anna appointed his brother Benito as governor of Hidalgo County. Benito suppressed the Native American cultures that still lingered in the area and built a road linking Mexico City with Austin through what is now San Antonio County. This road helped create economic opportunities for Mexican settlers in Hidalgo County.
