The history of Hidalgo, Texas can be traced back to the time before American independence. The area that now includes Hidalgo County was part of Spanish Texas and was ruled by the Alamo Company. In 1836, Mexican War veteran Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna took control of the region and successfully resisted American forces. As a result, much of what is now Hidalgo County was abandoned during the war and only returned to Spanish ownership in 1845. After Mexican independence was achieved in 1846, many Texans decided to move westward into new territory, including parts of present-day Hidalgo County. In 1870, settlers began moving into present-day Hidalgo County and soon enough there were so many people living in the area that it became known as “the most settled section of all Mexico”. By 1915, when US soldiers invaded Mexico to overthrow President Porfirio Diaz and restore democracy, much of what is now Hidalgo County had already been taken over by Anglo Americans. The reaction against the invaders was fierce and some people died as a result; however, overall development continued apace and within thirty years most of what is now Hidalgo Count
In 1836, Hidalgo was founded on the banks of the Colorado River. The town quickly grew and attained a level of prosperity not seen in the region for many years. In 1840, Hidalgo was named after Mexican revolutionary General José Antonio Hidalgo.
