The National Guard of Texas has a long and proud history in Hewitt, Texas. The unit was first organized on November 1, 1907 as the “Cowboys of the Plains” Regiment. The regiment served in World War I and II before being disbanded on September 15, 1957. The unit was reactivated on October 1, 1959 as the 141st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Light Infantry). In 1987, the brigade was redesignated as the 143rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Heavy Armor). On July 12, 1990, the brigade became part of III Corps and moved to Fort Bliss Army Base. In late 2003-early 2004, while stationed at Fort Bliss Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, members of the 143rd Brigade Combat Team were deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. In early 2006-mid 2006 members again deployd to Iraq when they activated for Operation Black Hawk Reuters Expedition which lasted from March 3-July 8th 2006. In early 2007-2008 members of the brigade deployed with mission support for Combined Joint Task Force - Southwest Asia (CJTF -SA) during their initial deployment to Afghanistan. During this time period they conducted counterinsurgency operations in Helmand Province along with other units from III Corps including two armoured brigades and an artillery battalion. Since its activation in 1959 there have been several major changes to how national guard gift history is documented across Texas. One change that occurred specifically within Hewitt is that state troopers now serve as Honorary Guards for visiting military families who are not actually residents or soldiers themselves. The Hewitt National Guard Museum is a museum in Hewitt, Texas, United States. It was founded in 2006 and is the only national guard museum in the state of Texas. The museum covers the history of the Hewitt National Guard from its creation on December 1, 1887 to present day. The museum also has an exhibit on the Battle of San Jacinto.
Hewitt is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hewitt is located on US-75 and TX-136 east of Wichita Falls. The Ottawa and Santa Fe Railroad crossed the town in 1879. The first post office was established in 1881, and the first settler to arrive in Hewitt was Wm. Hays. A cotton gin was built by John Sutherlin in 1886, making it one of the early cotton plantations in Texas. In 1893, Lizzie Blythe married George Edwin Hewitt Jr., who became an Oklahoma resident and rancher; they eventually sold their land to other settlers. The Hewitt School District opened its doors on November 9th, 1907 In 1916, Hewitt had its first professional football game when it hosted Wichita Falls High School's undefeated "A" team for a game that ended 0-0 after ninety minutes played due to rainstorms which continued throughout the night preceding the game. That year also saw the debut of professional wrestling as World Wrestling Federation (WWF) signed David Cartwright as a wrestler from Arkansas to face Tom Fenton at Memorial Auditorium with no sellout audience present because only high school students were allowed into the building at that time On October 12th 1909 local citizens organized themselves into an Agricultural Society and purchased 640 acres adjoining what is today known as North Street which ran between US 75 & TX 136 east of Wichita Falls This area would become known as "The Township" or simply "HewITT". On December 5th 1909 Sheriff JW Worthies delivered his report on progress made during his term as Constable saying there have been 7 natural disasters reported within 30 days including: floods, tornado outbreaks etc... During this time various stores/houses were burned out along with some churches leaving behind materials needed for new construction including: lime mortar for Streetscapes & Brick veneer for Churches

The National Guard is a term used to describe the military reserve of the United States. The National Guard was originally organized on July 1, 1775 as a response to the Declaration of Independence. It functioned as an arm of government until 1815 when it became an independent service. The first national guard units were raised in 1781 and served in the U.S. War for Independence. In 1824, President James K. Polk reorganized the army and created a national guard bureau which assigned troops to various states based on their population size and needs. On February 14, 1861, Abraham Lincoln called for all men over eighteen years old to be drafted into the Union Army unless they could prove they were able to provide a "' weld" or replacement for those lost in battle or unable to fight because of illness or age. As part of this effort, state militias were formed with men from each county and town under their command with orders to protect key points within their jurisdictions until ordered by higher authorities to stop defending themselves or disbanding altogether. This process continued through 1865 when all male citizens between eighteen and forty-four years old were required serve in one way or another in order to "provide security for our constitutional rights." President Ulysses S Grant issued an executive order calling forth volunteers from all sections of society on April 12, 1866 which authorized members of civilian organizations such as fraternal societies and Sunday schools (or any other voluntary organization) who had completed two years service without interruption theretoforeto become soldiers in the regular army without having theretofore been “engaged” therein so long as they did not take part in any insurrectionary manifesto OR religious demonstration; provided that these organizations manifested no hostility against either Republican loyalists OR United States officers thereof; AND that said individuals complied wholly with all regulations made by Colored Troops Commandant etcetera…. From then until 1898 there was no difficulty encountered by patriotic white males who had volunteered for service duringthis time period….. After 1898 however there was much more difficulty obtaining volunteer enlistments as many young people found political stability more attractive than military service……... henceforth enlisted men are drafted upon conviction that they will perform essential labor within our military establishment……... Today's active duty National Guardsmen are composed almost entirely of draft dodgers…."
Hewitt is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls-Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hewitt was founded on November 16, 1881 by John Hewitt and his brother-in-law Wm. Hargrave. The original store was built on the east side of town on Old Highway 281 near present day US 83. The early years of Hewitt were difficult as it competed with other towns for commerce and jobs in what was then a thinly populated area. A post office was established in 1884, but due to lack of mail service, only six parcels were mailed out from Hewitt each month. In 1886 local citizens organized themselves into a town board and began to build their own courthouse and jail; this helped to improve life for everyone in the community until statehood arrived two years later in 1890. When Johnson County became part of the new State of Texas on January 15, 1907, all land within its borders including Hewitt became part of the new county seat which had been established at Wichita Falls since 1865 under terms negotiated between Judge James Bowie and Colonel George Deal with help from US Congressman Oscar Burchill. At first it seemed like an excellent move for Wichita Falls; it would be closer to both Austin and Dallas than Fort Worth – both large cities had long been desired by Texans looking for a new county seat after Galveston had become too populous following its 1893 oil well explosion that killed 199 people and injured some 3 thousand more colonists (the event also made headlines around the world). However things quickly went south when Judge Bowie refused to give up his old home on East Main Street in downtown Wichita Falls so that Fort Worth could take over as county seat; this led to widespread anger throughout much of rural Johnson County where many felt they were being forced out by an undeserving city that did not share their values or history! Despite these negative feelings about Fort Worth quickly growing larger than any small town on its border, progress was being made nonetheless as developers began offering fresh land for sale inside & outside of Wichita Falls – something which never happened back at Houston’s Sam Houston Park where development continued unchecked until finally becoming fully legal fifteen years later thanks largely to Mayor White’s efforts during his time as City Councilman & current Director Of Development Services For The City Of Wichita Falls! While there have been some bumps along the way such as when Hewitt applied for & received funds from The Ford Foundation while still living inside Wichita Falls proper - these days things are generally moving forward pretty steadily thanks mainly to a young couple who purchased the old school building last year & have begun working hard remodeling it into what will soon be known simply as “The Town Hall” (not to be confused with current Municipal Court Building located just across First Street from Main Square – which has been completely renovated (& renamed “HewITT High School”!) since 2000!).
Hewitt, Texas was founded in 1876 by James Hewitt and his wife, Susannah. The Hewitts were farmers who tried to grow cotton and corn in what is now the city of Austin. They started a school and store in their village called Hewitt Station before moving to the larger town of San Marcos in 1881. In 1902, they moved again, this time to the current location of Austin. The Hewitts were successful ranchers and donated land for schools and other civic amenities in Austin. In 1954, they sold their rancho to the city of Austin for $5 million.
