Fordham as a small farming community on the east bank of the Trinity River. The Hewitt family operated a gristmill and flour mill until 1906 when they abandoned their business because of economic difficulty during World War I and Prohibition. The town became an agricultural center with cotton ginning and cattle raising becoming mainstays of its economy until the 1950s when oil discoveries began to drive local land values up. In the early 21st century, Hewitt experienced rapid growth as an apartment development boom continued to fuel job creation throughout much of the county; however, it has since begun to experience significant decline due to high housing prices and heavy traffic congestion that has led to limited retail opportunities along Interstate 45 corridor.
