Hewitt is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. Hewitt was founded in 1892 by George C. Hewitt and his partner, David L. Lewis. The first post office was established at Hewitt in 1893. It was discontinued in 1906. The population of Hewitt was 905 at the 2000 census. The community has been enlarged several times since its founding, most notably through the annexation of neighboring townships in 1948 and 1954. In 2006, Hewitt had a total population of 1,461 residents according to the US Census Bureau's estimate for that year. George C. Hewitt Sr., who founded Hewitt with his father George C., became one of the largest landowners in Williamson County and an early settler of rural Williamson County outside Austin or Dallas. A member of the Kansas State Senate from 1902 until 1904, he also served as director of public works for Harris County (present-day Houston). The first post office at Hewlett was established on September 12th 1892 by Gouverneur Fenton Butler with mail going to Fort Worth. This office operated from a building located on present day Court Street near where I-10 exits. On November 2nd 1896 John Sieving opened up a store next door to run along Main Street selling groceries including flour and hardware supplies before moving into market place adjacent to what is now called "The Bank". His store continued operation until 1898 when it burned down due to arson. On January 15th 1901 WILLIAM KNOX moved into the new Post Office Annex which consisted of two buildings on Second Avenue east side opposite School House Square being owned by JAMES HUGHES & CO (later known as THE WEST COAST COLLEGE).
