Hewitt is located on U.S. Route 281 and Texas State Highway 281 south of Austin and north of Dallas. The community began as a farming village in 1881, when James Hewitt founded the settlement of Hewitt Creek on land acquired from the Buena Vista Rancho Grande family. Hewitt, Texas is a small community located in the fertile Lovelock Valley of east-central Texas. The town was founded in 1859 by Captain John A. Hewitt and his wife, Lucy. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the Red River, which made it an important trading post for cattle and other items moving up the river. Hewitt became a county seat in 1865 and continued to grow as a result of its position as a transportation hub for settlers travelling westward from what is now Oklahoma. In 1907, Hewitt was renamed after Rear Admiral David S. Hewitt, Jr., commander of United States Forces during World War I and later United States Ambassador to Mexico City. The town experienced some significant growth during World War II when parts of Dallas were destroyed by firebombing raids conducted by the Japanese Imperial Army. After the war, Hewitt experienced another period of growth thanks to waves of new immigrants coming to Texas through Ellis Island in New York City. By 1960, Hewitt had reached its current size and status as an important local cultural center with a diverse population that includes many Hispanic residents and expatriates from around the world.
