Hewitt, Texas is a town in Ellis County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Hewitt was platted on November 10, 1876 by J.G. Barnes and W.W. Slaughter and named for General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War as part of the Dakota Territory. In 1907, Hewitt got its name from Roy Howell, an early settler who built a log cabin there in 1875-1876 and donated land to the town incorporation by deed dated December 14, 1907. In 1915 Hewitt hosted the first Republican National Convention in Dallas when Texas Governor John Connally was nominated for president that year by President Woodrow Wilson over incumbent William Jennings Bryan. During World War I tension increased between America's major allies Great Britain and France because of their respective neutrality agreements with Germany; however Hewitt remained largely uninvolved until 1918 when it became one of many towns along the Red River Valley Erected Name District (END) to help promote Dallas’ annexation into Dallas County as part of the countywide planning effort known as Planohood which also included other new towns such as Arlington Heights and Fair Park. On November 3rd 1920 Hewitt residents voted 2-1 to annexDallas into Ellis County after successfully lobbying state legislators including then-Governor Humbleton Smith with Mayor James Sitton serving as chairperson of what would be known as the Annexation Committee which oversaw all annexations within Ellis County up through 1966 inclusive On February 6th 1930 Stephens finally vetoed House Bill No 4190 which would have annexed Wichita Falls into Ellis County despite objections from Mayor Sitton who felt Wichita Falls had become too big or crowded since they were only two out of twenty municipalities within plansite boundaries while neighboring Arlington Heights had more than doubled its population since 1910 making it eligible for annexation On July 25th 1931 Hewitt incorporated under State Statute 108A (now Code 752), becoming one of only three towns in North Texas to do so following ratification by the State Legislature on August 12th 1931 A referendum held a few days later resulted in 54% approval againstsurrendering jurisdiction back to Wichita Falls
