The Hewitt Army Store was founded in 1906 by Mrs. J.C. Hewitt and her husband, Maj. Gen. John C. Hewitt Sr., during the time of World War I when they were stationed at Ft Worth, Texas as part of the 1st Texas Infantry Regiment (Airmobile). The store was opened on Main Street in Hewitt,Texas and became known for its large selection of military supplies and equipment including artillery pieces, tanks, planes and boats. In 1951 the store moved to its present location on US-73 just south of town square which has been home to the store since it opened. In 1977 General Edward Eustis purchased the store from Mrs. Hewitt's son Maj. Gen John C. Hewitt III who had owned it since 1916 when he succeeded his father as Colonel in command of Company G, 1st Battalion (Majors), 2nd Texas Infantry Regiment (Airmobile). At that time the store was located in a two story structure with an interior courtyard surrounded by a six foot high metal fence topped with barbed wire for protection against theft by junior officers or their families while off duty at night or during unrest times within the army units deployed abroad without their personal arms and ammunition stores! On July 14th 1977 General Edward Eustis dedicated "Hewitt's Army Store" to serve all soldiers currently serving or soon to serve in our country through economic development including job creation through marketing programs Please help us celebrate this important anniversary !! Hewitt is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. Hewitt is located on the edge of the Hill Country, and its elevation ranges from sea level to 4,371 feet (1,406 m). The town was founded in 1881 by John A. Hewitt and his brothers-in-law W.T. and H.M. Godfrey as a place where they could sell their goods to settlers moving through the area. They built a log cabin near the current site of Hewitt on an undeveloped piece of land that now serves as a parkland reserve. In 1886, John A. Hewitt married Anna Pemberton and settled in this community with their four children: Edwin D., Anna F., John A., and Clara Blease Hewitt born December 24th, 1886; all died young except Edwin D.. Anna Fonda married Wiley Beavers in 1910 and he also settled here but died suddenly in 1916; Clara Blease married Earle Crouse in 1922 and they also raised two children herebefore moving to Midland when she became Mrs. Earle Crouse's daughter-in-law in 1945 after his death from leukemia at age 49 years old; both parents were natives of England where they had emigrated as children before becoming citizens of Texas In 1865 when Harden began operations there was just one store open for business with six customers while seven other stores were open along First Street between Houston Road and Elm Street each selling goods such as groceries, hardware supplies etc.; three more stores opened within one year including one by Ewing & Sons which offered dry goods along with groceries Harden closed its doors for good on October 2nd 1870 due to low sales combined with competition from several new retail locations operated by men such as George Waddell who reopened the store March 1st 1871 under the name "Northeast" . Today's plaza has been developed over time into what it is today thanks largely to $2 million dollars invested by Mayor Donny Ingram who purchased it from Gillett Development Company back in 1984 for $4 million On May 6th 1865 Vinson Mfg Co established itself at 1218 N Main St later renamed "Sears" after Sears Roebuck & Co had bought out Old North Store across Main Street

The town was named for General David Houston, who had been governor of the Republic of Texas at the time of its founding. Hewitt built a small post office and store on the site of present day Midland and began to trade goods with surrounding towns. In 1854, he married Fannie Jane Dean and the couple started a family. In 1865, Hewitt became an official delegate to the Texas Constitutional Convention that created the state of Texas. He also served as justice of the peace in Midland from 1870 until his death in 1886.
