The Hewitt Air Force Base Museum is home to the largest collection of air force gift history in Texas. The museum contains artifacts from more than 50 years of the state’s military aviation. One of the earliest examples of air force gift history was the donation by Colonel A.P. Hewitt, Jr., president and general manager of Continental Airlines, to the Hewitt Air Force Base Museum on November 2, 1951. This gesture helped ensure that Hewitt AFB would have a permanent collection of aircraft and equipment for display and research purposes. Today, visitors can explore nearly every type of military aircraft at the Hewitt AFB Museum – including Boeing 707s, F-86F Sabres, C-130Js, P-3C Orion maritime reconnaissance planes and USAF KC-135 counterespionage helicopters! The museum also has an extensive storehouse of military memorabilia dating back to World War II.

Hewitt, Texas is a city in Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bastrop County. The city was named after John W. Hewitt, an early settler and founder of Bastrop County. Hewitt was founded by John W. Hewitt in 1844 as a wagon stop on the San Antonio River nearpresent-day Lubbock.[1] In 1850, he became one of the first farmers in what is now Bastrop County when he purchased land from the Comanches for $5 per acre.[2] He built his home on this tract and his five daughters lived there until their deaths in 1907, 1912 and 1917 respectively. In 1857, he married Eliza Hutton and they raised four children before her death in 1902. They sold their farm to Aimee Bogue Cowan in 1922.[3] The town name may be derived from Mrs. Cowan's initials "A."B." or "HB". The first schools were organized in Hewitt by Reverend Jno Bellinger with eight students[4] in 1875; two years later school consolidation led to the establishment of Bastrop ISD (now Bastrop Independent School District) which included Hewitt Elementary School and High School both located on Elm Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue North.[5][6][7][8][9][10] In 1927 Crossroads Baptist Church moved from its original location east of town to become downtown’s first church,[11][12] followed by First Baptist Church (1927), Methodist Episcopal Church (1928), Presbyterianism (1929) then Baptist Churches (1930-1960).[13][14]:327 In 1957 Air Force Base closed down components of Fort Worth while Tyndall AFB opened up north providing employment for many people including local businessmen such as Cagle & Anderson who donated land for a shopping center called "Pecos" that opened July 20th 1959 with anchor stores Toyota Motorsports Park retailing auto parts along I-10 next to Pecos Casino & Resort becoming known as SHOPCorp following completion of Alcoa Aluminum plant southeast oftown renamed Rio Tinto Open Space Park on December 1st 1984 which includes an amusement park complete with Ferris wheel operator Wild West Attractions
